Anniversary of Dieppe Raid Marked by Canadians

Representatives of the three Canadian fighting services will attend a Dieppe ceremony August 19 marking the third anniversary of the raid by the 2nd Canadian Division and the town's liberation last September. About 300 armed forces members, 65 RCAF personnel, and 25 Royal Canadian Navy members will attend the main ceremony featuring a memorial plaque unveiling in Du Canada Square.

May Return To Standard Time In Canada

Ottawa sources say a sharp drop in war production after VJ Day will trigger a return to standard time across Canada probably in October. The government has not committed to rescinding daylight saving time as a wartime power saving measure, but authorities expect the change after Japan’s surrender. Two Leave Trains Crash In Germany Kills 26

AP: 26 Canadian and British soldiers killed and 50 injured in a head on collision of two passenger trains near Gogh. Canadian Pte Albert Braalen of Wadena Saskatchewan survived with his car and the adjacent coach overturned. Most casualties were British personnel.

Russians Drive into North China From Outer Mongolia

News dispatches report Soviet troops pushing 95 miles from outer Mongolia into Jehol province and seizing Linsi and Tapanshang, about 260 miles north of Peiping. Repats on Britannic return to Canada after war

Ottawa reports 91,874 of 161,600 arms and RCAF personnel slated for return have already come back by year end. In Quebec, the liner Britannia arrives with 2,729 soldiers, 545 airmen, 487 sailors, nursing Sisters, and CWAC members. A Winnipeg man, Cpl. Jack Martin, was among those aboard. He and L/Cpl. Dick helped capture 350 Germans in France last September and endured mortar fire and POW captivity before the Allied advance.

Yugoslav Protest at UN Relief Plan For Italy

Yugoslavia objects to the American relief proposal for Italy at the UN Relief and Rehabilitation Conference. Nikola Petrovic says countries that fought Italy should vote before action, and that France Greece Ethiopia Albania Yugoslavia must be heard before granting relief to an enemy state. Krupp Arrest Reported by BBC in German Broadcast

The BBC said in a German language broadcast that Dr Alfred Krupp von Bohlen und Habacht senior partner of the Krupp munitions works was arrested by British troops and taken to an undisclosed destination. He had been under house detention in a villa in the British occupation zone.

Veteran plunges from Burrard Bridge in Vancouver

A 51 year old war veteran, unnamed, fell about 100 feet from the Burrard bridge north end in Vancouver. He was hospitalized in a semi conscious state. Police said his wife reported he was discharged from the RCAF on Aug 4 and had left home yesterday to seek work.

Weeping Japs Gather At Emperor's Palace

New York August 14 1945 Domei Japanese agency said in a recorded broadcast that the imperial decision was granted and that crowds wept bowing before the palace in shame their efforts not enough. The message noted Hirohito’s concern since the 1941 war rescript and urged all 100 million subjects to listen to an upcoming transmission of great importance.
