Union OKs offer end to BC forestry strike

The Inter national Woodworkers of America and two pulp unions near agreement on a two year wage package boosting average pay to 15.17 an hour from 11.55 with a 28 point price trigger. Voting on the offer begins today and could end within a week as talks continue.

Firefighters hold line as Swan Hills evacuation ends

Alberta officials said Swan Hills residents could return after firefighters contained a forest fire north of the town 180 kilometres northwest of Edmonton. About 2,000 of the 2,500 residents had been evacuated to Fort Assiniboine and Barrhead. the evacuation was the longest in five years. Wind shifts delayed an earlier end to the evacuation. The fire grew to 12,500 hectares. only Swan Hills residents may return as of 8 a.m. MDT.
