Twenty Ton Explosion at Suffield Experimental Station

A 20 ton TNT blast was set off at Suffield Experimental Station at 2 p m. chief superintendent A M Pennie called it routine in the station s sound and blast program with US participation and tests by the Emergency Measures Organization and the Canadian army. The program also included a five tonner in June and another planned for September with hopes for a 500 ton blast in 1964 and a 100 ton explosion in 1961 described as the largest man made non nuclear blast.

Young Man Shot During Break In At Redcliff Drug Store

A Medicine Hat man, 21, Donald Schneider of 775th St., was shot in the thigh during a break in at Redcliff Drug Store. He was arrested, tried for breaking and entering with intent, convicted, and sentenced to six months in Lethbridge Jail. George J. Hawrelak, the proprietor, fired the shot after Schneider allegedly grabbed him. Police chief Joseph Cartmell outlined a timeline from 5:20 a.m. break in to 10 a.m. court appearance.

Post Office Robbed at Nobleford

Thieves smashed a safe at the Nobleford Alberta post office and stole 150 blank money orders plus 123 dollars in cash. Police said the robbery was found Monday morning by post office staff and warned the blank orders could be written for any amount up to 100 dollars each.

Two Cosmonauts Land in Russia After Space Flight

Russia reports the two cosmonauts Maj. Andrian Nikolayev and Lt. Col. Pavel Popovich have landed their Vostok capsules near the central Volga region. both men in good health, observers say the 95 and 61 minute flights set records, with landing in the predetermined area and doctors to monitor effects of prolonged space flight. crowds cheered Cosmos in Moscow as officials noted the jubilation.

Canadian photographer Roloff Beny to photo Canada centennial book

Roloff Beny 38, a Medicine Hat native now living in Rome, is commissioned to create a photo book on Canada for the 1967 centennial. He will visit Canada several times to shoot ruins and landscapes, returning to Medicine Hat for possible assignment visits amid his international art career.

Beny hints at unique approach for upcoming project

Fund Honors Dr. Knox and Dr. Nixon Memorial Trust

Regina CP The Saskatchewan College of Physicians and Surgeons announced a memorial trust fund to aid families of two physicians killed in a plane crash near Arcola July 23. Dr John Knox Maple Creek and Dr Robert Nixon Estevan, both college governors, left widows and several children. The fund will provide ongoing financial aid to families of medical practitioners.

Fliers Found After Calgary to Vancouver Flight Crash

Former Polish fighter pilot Jan Falkowski and three passengers were found alive after a missing flight from Calgary to Vancouver. Spotted on the wing of their downed aircraft near Nahtouza Lake about 300 miles north, they were rescued by a forest service helicopter from Prince George and taken to Redfern Ledge on Tetachuk Lake eight miles away. All four were reported in good condition.
