Fatal tanker crash cuts Brooks canal spill disrupts irrigation

A tanker truck crashed 25 kilometres west of Brooks on the Trans Canada Highway, killing the driver and dumping 58 000 litres of gasoline into the Springhill Canal. The spill closed the canal for at least a day affecting 20 000 hectares of irrigation while crews used skimmers booms and pumper trucks to contain and clean up. Detours were in place on the Trans Canada Highway as responders worked.

Man shoots self in sleep with loaded pistol

A 24 year old Detroit man sleeping with a loaded semi automatic pistol woke to a loud noise and found he had shot his penis. He drove himself to the hospital with 16 stitches and told police he did not know how the weapon discharged. No permanent damage beyond a scar was reported.

Westbound CN wreck near Edson halts key line

A westbound CN freight train collided head on with a derailed eastbound consist on a main line near Edson 10 km east of Edson Alberta just before midnight. Three crew members are missing and three bodies were recovered for forensic examination. CN initiated a full investigation while noting possible safety declines since privatization.

Calgary high risk pedophile charged with sexual assault

Curtis Hilchey, 31, labeled a high risk pedophile, was charged with sexual assault, sexual interference with a child under 14, and indecent exposure after allegedly luring a seven year old girl to a Marlborough park. He will appear in provincial court Thursday. High River RCMP issued a public alert following his Bowden Institution release on June 22. Local residents question why the alert was not wider in Calgary.

Liberal call for emergency budget to fund health care

Liberal leader Grant Mitchell urged the Conservative government to pass an emergency budget before summer, directing new funds to health care amid a crisis claim. At the Somalia inquiry in Ottawa Gen. Jean Boyle, then associate deputy minister, denies authorizing altered RTQ briefing notes given to a CBC reporter in fall 1993. He says he would have recalled any document alteration and faults higher approval for the disclosure.
