Joe Edley, 44, rallied to beat Montreal’s Joel Wapnick 465-325 in the final of the USS National Scrabble Championship. Edley’s 70 point word quantiles turned the match after a tense start, earning him the $10,000 prize.
NDP charges ministerial staff and possibly civil servants were asked to monitor opposition activity for an Alberta election. A leaked Aug. 6 memo from Doug Baynton asks employees to gather opposition propaganda for an “opposition watch” file. Stockwell Day calls the memo improper and blames an overly eager researcher.
Jay and Linda Hill received 99 year prison terms after being convicted of injury to a child in the case of their 13-year-old son Stephen who weighed 55 pounds when found comatose in a mobile home last November and died days later. Their other son Douglas testified against them. juror Jack Mitchell criticized the parents for letting the boy die.
In Ottawa the Canadian human rights tribunal found the forces mandatory retirement policy discriminatory. Nine of ten servicemen received compensation from nearly five thousand to two hundred sixteen thousand dollars, with the tribunal saying the policy is not reasonably necessary. The case stemmed from varied retirement ages tied to enlistment, rank, and job. The ruling notes the forces can manage career development without the policy, and that retirements already account for about 10 percent of turnover.
The UN Security Council backed possible use of troops to secure humanitarian aid in four month Bosnian war. Lord Carrington opened talks in Brussels with presidents of four former Yugoslav republics as mediators seek progress. France offered 1,100 troops for convoy protection.
Environment Minister Ralph Klein says politics may influence a tire incineration project in Trochu, with a byelection in Three Hills looming. Cabinet will decide by Sept 2 after a favorable scientific review, though costlier than rival options. Local backlash follows the initial rejection and Osterman’s resignation as Trochu pressures for approval.
Prime Minister Brian Mulroney and Joe Clark butting heads over a Senate reform plan. Clark proposes a temporary non elected Senate with Ontario and Quebec at 24 seats and other provinces at 10 except Prince Edward Island at four. Remillard rejects a Triple-E Senate while Mulroney eyes parity for Alberta and British Columbia with Ontario and Quebec.
In a mid July fax to managers Hollis Harris accused Ottawa of favoring Canadian Airlines, saying the government harms Air Canada. Canadian Airlines talks with Air Canada began later in July after American Airlines’ rescue bid failed. Harris cited US leverage blocking Japan routes and noted three new planes bought for those routes.
