A four year old Medicine Hat girl woke her parents to a fire at their home on 36 8th St. S.W. Firefighters arrived around 9 30 a.m. the porch and house suffered smoke and water damage with an estimated value of 55000. No injuries were reported and investigators continue the inquiry.
S. Sgt. Larry Brink says Derek Levi Kelly, 19, was seized in Medicine Hat on Sunday during a routine probe. He is wanted in Vancouver for break and enter and escaping custody and had been using the name Derek Kuzmak on Seventh Street S.W. near Alexandria High School. He will be returned to Vancouver to face charges, with Vancouver police noting the warrant was active since June 26.
In Vancouver, British Columbia, arbitrator Joe Weiler ruled compulsory retirement based solely on age violates the Human Rights Code. He ordered the Prince Rupert Fishermen's Co operative Association to reinstate Harford Miller with back pay and full seniority, totaling about 8 000 dollars. The decision drew support from Jack Munro of the IWA who indicated the union is pursuing similar grievances.
City council agenda includes final reading of a controversial dog bylaw and three money bylaws. One bylaw seeks 1 833 333 dollars to fund the Trans Canada Highway bridge project and Dunmore Road design, plus highway widening. Total project cost about 5 180 000 dollars with two thirds provincial funding. A second bylaw would borrow 940 000 dollars for electric utility extensions and upgrades including South Ridge Crescent Heights lines and downtown network. A third bylaw covers 205 000 dollars for street improvements on First Street, Maple Avenue, and Division Avenue in Crescent Heights.
U S ambassador Thomas Enders urged Canada and the United States to sustain a stronger arms race stance against the Soviet Union. He warned co operation alone is insufficient and called for continued training and possible income sacrifices to build military strength and support arms control efforts.
Edmonton report says a Fort Saskatchewan Correctional Institute prisoner escaped for 13 minutes Sunday while visiting parents. Michael Tkachuk 26 of Edmonton was in custody on remand for multiple charges. A second inmate Rex Greenwood 17 escaped from Aberhart Hospital and was recaptured by police and a dog.
Alberta designates Highway 3 from Medicine Hat to Hope as Crowsnest Highway 3. The change follows years of discussion with the Southeastern Alberta Travel and Convention association and community agreement. A logo plan will be debated with the B.C. association in mid September, with provincial crests used on each side of the boundary.
Local motel operators say tourist traffic in Medicine Hat is down from last summer while some American visitors increase due to a weaker Canadian dollar. Officials cite construction slowdowns, high gas prices, and stamps exhibitions as factors, with about 8,500 people stopping at the tourist centre and 792,000 non Alberta cars counted in July and August.
Enumerators in Cypress constituency gear up for a fall election with 7 500 electors and 47 polls as new provincial rules require two enumerators per rural poll. Meetings were held in Irvine Manyberries Foremost and Bow Island with 170 enumerators in Medicine Hat preparing a 23 000 voter list.
Two province wide outages hit Saskatchewan on Saturday and Sunday leaving communities without electricity for about six hours. The first outage began with lightning near Estevan around 6 a.m. local time and was mostly restored by mid morning. A second outage at Boundary Dam near Estevan occurred around 10:30 a.m. after a 138 kilovolt circuit breaker failed. Travellers faced fuel and service disruptions. church services were affected with no lights or PA in Regina. RCMP reported no unusual incidents.
