Crown corporation eyed for utilities in Medicine Hat

Medicine Hat's attempt to secure more natural gas reserves faces legal limits. Mayor Ted Grimm says forming a Crown corporation for the city’s utilities could bypass restrictions, enabling share purchases in gas fields and a more competitive approach. Alderman Ken Sauer notes current city charter prohibits buying shares in private gas interests without legislative changes. If incorporated, awaiting private member’s bill and provincial approval, the utility could operate more like a business and better meet peak 1984 demand.
