Prison Riot at Headingley Jail Endangers Inmates

RCMP used tear gas on two prisoner cages at Headingley jail near Winnipeg to quell a five hour riot by about 32 inmates sparked by food complaints. Windows were broken, radiators ripped out, a cell door torn, and wash facilities damaged as water soaked lower floors.

Federal budget deficit revised down in 1954-55

Ottawa reports the 1954-55 deficit at 151.85 million, $42.15 million lower than Finance Minister Harris projected in April. Hot Weather Ripens Lush Crops Across Southern Alberta

Weather in southern Alberta boosted grain ripening with swathing under way in Seven Persons and Whitla areas. Alberta Wheat Pool agent Glen Farnhan said crops will set record yields with wheat 30 to 35 bushels per acre and rye 20 to 25. Aphids mainly light except Granum and Monarch where significant losses occurred. Hillspring faced severe hail damage with 4,000 acres flattened.

Good Crops in Bow Island Area

Bow Island reports rye swathing across the district with most now in swaths. Barley and wheat swathing began this week while no grain has been threshed yet. Grains reach up to six feet in height in some areas and winds have caused leaning. Harvesting should be longer though grain is in good condition. Hot weather provides ideal harvest conditions.

Dalyce Smith Miss Canada 1955 24 year old from Dawson Creek arrives in Bow Island with her mother to visit family including grandmother Mrs Anna Kjaidgard and aunts Mrs Cecil Lynn and Mrs Roland Martin. She is en route to Toronto and New York before competing in Miss America in Atlantic City on Sept 5.
