Flour Mill to Boost Medicine Hat Trade and Jobs

Medicine Hat prepares a large flour mill project with a 50 hp boiler and engine, 36 by 46 feet building, five double stands, and 60 000 bushel elevator. It will process two barrels daily, expandable to twice that, using grain from the district and eastern territories. Site work is near completion and operations expected by mid September.

Sad Accident at Maple Creek Claims CPR Brakeman

A CPR brakeman James Lee was killed at Maple Creek while boarding a lumber car on a shifting freight near No 1 siding. He fell when a board broke and was run over by four wheels. Dr. Deane could not save him. Lee, a Brotherhood of Trainmen member, was bound for interment in Pennsylvania. Brakeman Smart injured in Swift Current caboose accident and expected to return to work soon. The Calgary court affirmed the Edmonds property tax sale. Millar & Burgess sold their real estate business to The Transfer, Real Estate and Commission Company. Pen d O’rielle customs office opened with F Sexton in charge.

Highest place for Edmonton schools in exams

The Edmonton Post claims Edmonton schools topped the recent examinations with the highest average success rate, but Medicine Hat records surpass Edmonton with 88 percent. All pupils who wrote second and third class teachers exams and the Public School Leaving Examination passed. Names listed include Emma Collier Elma Cosens and others. Medicine Hat can be proud of its school record.

Agricultural Society plans fall exhibition on October dates

The Agricultural Society held a Saturday directors meeting with Jas Rae presiding. They discussed securing a new exhibition site on the Herald and Mountain properties and set October 1 and 2 for the fair with government livestock judges. Prizes have been increased to boost exhibitor interest and the 1903 prize list is available from the secretary. The outcome aims for the best show yet under the Society.

Stockyard Improvements At Dunmore And Stair

Mr. McMullen of C P R Live Stock Inspector informs Mr. Bray that the Dunmore stockyards will be enlarged and upgraded to suit growing trade. Work may start this summer or early next spring with relocation to higher ground about 100 yards west for drainage. Flooring and shedding to be added, boosting capacity to a two train yard. Stair yards to close and move west to Suffield due to Canadian Land and Ranch Co. property, seeking water and better stock shipping facilities.

Magistrates Court Hears Laframboise and Summers Cases

Isadore Laframboise was committed for trial at the next Supreme Court sitting in November after a preliminary hearing at Havre Montana for horse stealing. William Summers was fined $50 and jailed one month at Maple Creek for being drunk while interdicted in a complaint by J I Bray license inspector.

Shipment of Bulls Arrives for Connors Bros Ranch

Connors Bros ranchers at Sounding Lake north of Red Deer receive sixty five Shorthorn bulls from Texas. The herd will be trailed north to the range as part of expanding operations.

A Fine Warehouse by Marshall and Hunter

Marshall and Hunter completed a fine warehouse and workshop behind the Opera House Block. The building measures 46 by 51 feet with an eight foot basement and nine foot ceilings on the upper storey. A 25 by 25 foot top storey workshop, a 6 by 10 foot hoist, and storage for hardware are provided. A crematory furnace in the cellar disposes of burnable refuse, reducing rubbish. This addition yields over 15,000 feet of floor space, making it one of the Northiest’s largest buildings.

Medicine Hat Lacrosse Defeated In Lethbridge Match

The Medicine Hat lacrosse club traveled to Lethbridge on civic holiday Tuesday and lost 10 to 6 to the home team. The loss sets up a potential rematch back in Medicine Hat for the Taffee trophy. Councillor D. Milne returns from Winnipeg. Wash E. Collins, IOOF organizer, is in town. F. Forster of Pincher Creek, Champion machinery agent, plans Medicine Hat as his HQ this week.
