Bronc rider dies after rodeo fall near High Level
Darcy Donald Chalifoux, a bareback rider from Brownvale, was six seconds into his ride at Paddle Prairie Rodeo when the horse threw him and stepped on his chest. He died en route to hospital. RCMP and CRA comment that rodeo fatalities are rare and athletes accept sport risks.

Murder suspect in Duchess shooting appears in Brooks court
Phillip McDowell 27 faced second degree murder charges for the early Tuesday shooting death of Ronald Barker 40 at the Duchess residence of McDowell and his father Lyn at the intersection of Highway 36 and Highway 550. The autopsy was performed in Calgary. a preliminary hearing date was set for August 25 in Brooks.

Perseid meteor shower to light up Medicine Hat skies
Medicine Hat astronomy club members led by Erich Petke will view the Perseid shower from the Sunridge Observatory tonight into the morning. Doomsday comet Swift-Tuttle’s debris, orbiting Earth every 135 years, creates a bright display as meteors burn in the atmosphere. Viewers are urged to bring chairs, flashlights, and binoculars and to arrive by 11:45 p.m. The event is free with a public interpreter on site and coverage also available via NASA’s perseidslive.com.

In Alexandria a 32 year old man pronounced dead after drowning off Egypt’s coast reawakened after three hours in a morgue refrigerator. Ali Abdel Rahim Mohammad reportedly grabbed an attendant’s hand as the drawer was being closed, sending staff and a grieving family fleeing. He later walked out to call his relatives.

Migrants dumped from ship off Queen Charlotte Islands
About 150 Chinese migrants, including children aged three to five, were dumped at Gilbert Bay on the Queen Charlotte Islands.
