Air Canada Plans Layoffs Amid Big Losses

Air Canada will lay off about 2000 employees and cut operations after a 36.5 million loss in the first six months. Union negotiations cover 17000 of 20000 workers with a planned 10 percent staff reduction by year end. Management cuts and executive pay deferral will accompany layoffs over the next four months. Alberta Slave River hydro project draft review guides released

A 28 page federal Environment Department list outlines environmental concerns before work can begin on Alberta's proposed 8 billion Slave River hydroelectric project near Fort Smith. The guides follow Alberta's 40 million design start without approval and address impacts on water flow, wildlife, climate, water quality, land and aboriginal rights, plus road access and transmission lines. Public hearings on Sept 30 will gather input as both provinces and two utilities move toward a joint venture with TransAlta and Alberta Power.

Alberta doctors continue extra-billing survey shows decline

A government survey shows 41.5 percent of Alberta doctors extra-bill in April down from 43 percent in March. The average extra-billing fee rose to 9.66 dollars from 8.82, while doctors’ income from extra-billing remains a smaller share of Medicare payments.

PLO talks put on hold in Lebanon

Lebanese Prime Minister Shafik Wazzan suspended talks with US mediator Philip Habib over evacuation of the PLO from Beirut amid heavy Israeli air strikes. Israel pressed a siege intended to rout the PLO, while Begin in Jerusalem cited progress but flagged France and UN involvement as obstacles. Iraq offered to accept PLO fighters as Syria Jordan and other states had already done. Air and ground attacks continued for hours.

Goodyear plans recall at Medicine Hat plant

Goodyear Canada Inc at Medicine Hat will recall 56 laid off workers by early October with recalls starting Monday. About 20 workers return by end of August and 36 more in September as production for passenger tires is expected to resume by August 30 and tractor tires by September 27. The plant, employing about 125, has slowed output since December 1981 due to weak markets.

Medicine Hat to honor man who shares its name

Medicine Hat marks a centennial year in 1983 and hopes to invite John Burrows born August 1883 in the city. Burrows now lives in Lindsay Ontario and may visit Medicine Hat on Heritage Day June 10 or Burrows birthday August 24 with a sponsor. He was briefly in the city as a child during the 1880s and has no memories of it.
