Statistics Canada reports July food price index up 2.1 percent, pushing the 12 month inflation to 8.4 percent. Higher beef pork and other items lift costs. Ontario tobacco tax and housing also factor in. Unemployment sits at 8.1 percent, higher than a year ago.
Ottawa reports a 2.1 percent jump in the consumer price index in July driven by food costs. Beef prices account for about 31 percent of the food index rise, with pork and fresh fruit contributing 19.3 and 16.6 percent respectively. Cattlemen's president Gracey links beef price rebound to a long period of low producer spirits and high production costs.
U S businessman William Weinkamer, an executive at Credito de Mexico, was abducted near Mexico City by three men and a woman. Police report a 1.35 million dollar ransom. the embassy notes the firm is tied to Gold Inc. of Chicago and that Weinkamer arrived from the Chicago area recently.
Ottawa says the September issue of Penthouse is allowed entry after Ottawa head office approval. Earlier reports claimed about 500000 copies were seized by customs due to nude young girls in photos. In May 1977 the magazine was blocked for oral sex photos but allowed after the pages were removed.
Queen Elizabeth wraps up Jubilee visits in Northern Ireland with a plea for peace and reconciliation. She condemns terrorism and pledges Britain's resolve to restore stability, noting earlier IRA threats and a night of disrupted security at Coleraine University.
PLO says guerrillas beat back three Israeli tank assaults near Yarine in southern Lebanon. Israel denies any attack and cites heavy artillery reports around Metulla and Marjayoun. Communiques also describe ongoing border duels with artillery and mortars.
Edwards Air Force Base California reports the space shuttle Enterprise makes a safe desert landing after a fast steep glide from its mother ship. Astronauts Fred Haise and Gordon Fullerton piloted the engineless 75 ton craft aided by a computerized system. The flight marks a milestone toward a reusable space bus to carry seven people and up to 65 000 pounds of cargo in the 1980s.
A 22 year old Newfoundland man David Young was flown to Foothills Hospital Calgary in critical condition after a car truck crash on the Trans Canada Highway at Sixth Street S W in Medicine Hat Thursday. Three others were taken to Medicine Hat and District Hospital. Gordon MacKillop 21 Victoria driver of the car was treated and released after pleading guilty to failing to stop at a red light and fined 50 dollars. John Gruber 41 of Calgary driver of a milk truck was not injured. Damages were 1800 dollars for the car and 700 dollars for the truck. The intersection has had multiple accidents since temporary lights were installed about a year ago.
Police launched door to door searches in Sherbrooke and dispatched helicopters to locate Charles Marion 57 abducted last weekend from his Stoke country cabin and held for a 1 million dollar ransom. About 60 officers, including 30 emergency squad members from Montreal, searched the city as notes from the kidnappers and a survivor photo surfaced.
Ottawa reports the slow return of Toronto air traffic controllers as Transport Minister Otto Lang's department watches closely. MPs passed legislation to force CATCA members back to work with no penalties after opposition parties opposed them. If noncompliance continues, enforcement via Public Service Staff Relations Board or a court injunction is possible.
Air Canada and CP Air report continued delays and cancellations at Toronto Pearson while Montreal flights largely normalize after a strike end. Controllers' slow operations kept outbound and inbound flights delayed up to two hours, with 16 short haul cancellations in Toronto by midday. Norman Garwood says Montreal is back to normal.
