Two Syrian MiG-17 jets landed at a northern Israeli airfield at 8:45 a.m. both pilots were safe. Observers linked the arrival to the El Al hijacking and Algeria's refusal to release the airliner and crew. Authorities offered few details.
New York AP Jackie Robinson resigns as an aide to Gov. Nelson Rockefeller and says he will back the Democrat against Richard Nixon. He calls Nixon's ticket racist and accuses him of pandering to Southern bigots. Robinson urges blacks and minorities to vote Democratic.
Inuvik NWT saw reduced fire danger as calmer conditions allowed officials to trim crews. A spot blaze near the MacKenzie delta village hospital prompted containment efforts after winds shifted away from Inuvik, which had been edged by fire since Thursday and surrounded by smaller outbreaks.
In Watts during a festival marking the third anniversary of the Watts riots police traded fire with Black residents. A man in his mid 30s was killed, three officers wounded, and more than 40 injured as the disturbance spread across about 20 blocks. Police said the incident began when two traffic officers were fired upon and reinforcements called.
Police quelled a Montreal drivers strike halting government contracted mail moves. About 400 Rod Services workers demanded three weeks pay while PMG Kierans suspended the contract and hired alternate drivers to resume letters and overseas mail flows.
East German leader Walter Ulbricht arrived in Karlovy Vary for talks with Czech reformists on political and economic ties. He met with Alexander Dubcek and was to press Prague for guarantees against West German influence and to gauge Czech stance toward the Warsaw Pact and Soviet security.
Fort Smith NWT facing a major landslide after a Friday collapse that destroyed two homes and imperiled others along the Slav River. Officials estimate $250,000 in damage and up to 600,000 cubic yards of sand, with four more houses and a chapel at risk. Mrs. Ferguson remains missing as round‑the‑clock searches continue amid ongoing danger from additional slides.
Two Toronto actors Mark Winters and Jerry Lostur aborted their balloon crossing and ditched about eight miles off Sheet Harbor Nova Scotia Sunday afternoon. They drifted in a 15 foot craft beneath the balloon until rescued by the trawler Karendawn from Port Bickerton late Sunday night.
CALPA spokesman says strike could start next week if talks with Air Canada do not resume. A 1000 member pilots group sets Tuesday strike vote in Montreal and Vancouver after negotiations broke off. Wage gaps remain about four percent. Air Canada offered 17 percent over 28 months, above the conciliation board’s 26 months.
Vice-President Hubert Humphrey says he plans to win the Democratic nomination on the first ballot with about 1600 delegate votes. Gov. Lester Maddox hints at a four way race by running himself, branding others liberals and socialists, with a Georgia delegation of 42 votes at stake.
