Royal broadcaster Princess Margaret's Canada departure was delayed by 1 hour 45 minutes to permit a nationwide television and radio broadcast before she attends a farewell state dinner in Halifax.
Western Canada reports another major air hunt as the RCAF and US forces seek a missing light plane with three aboard from Inuvik to Fairbanks. Separate incidents include a floatplane crash near Lake Athabasca and a youth missing near Whitecourt, with ongoing searches across Yukon and Alberta.
A Sunday night electrical storm brought only a trace of rain to the parched district. The brief thunder and lightning cooled the heat, but temperatures rebound to around 90 for today with a low near 55. Tuesday may be cooler at 85 with widely scattered showers in parts of Southern Alberta.
In Watrous Saskatchewan two railway workers were injured when an eastbound CNR freight backed into the rear of another train at the station. Fireman James Keith of Biggar and engineer George Morrow of Biggar suffered non serious injuries after the diesel knifed through the caboose and the stacked wreckage briefly entangled the units. Morrow released after treatment. Keith kept for observation.
Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev said the combined strength of the Communist bloc is unbeatable while dedicating a huge hydro-electric station on the Volga. He accused Britain and the United States of aggression toward Lebanon, Jordan, and the Iraqi republic and warned that if war is unleashed the world will see peace destroyed. Peng Chen, mayor of Beijing, was quoted claiming China could mobilize 100,000,000 in a world war.
Sir Winston Churchill vacations in Nice aboard Aristotle Onassis yacht Christina in Monaco harbor. He dined with Greta Garbo and later played cards with Garbo, George Schlee, Lord Beaverbrook, and the Onassis couple while a crowd watched as Churchill smoked five cigars.
Two drownings within under an hour claim the lives of Dale Jensen 16 and James Lee 21 in the Forty Mile Coulee canal near Foremost Alberta. RCMP and locals recovered their bodies by 5:30 p.m. Officials noted strong undertow and ruled out immediate inquests. The weekend toll across Western Canada climbs with other drownings and a fatal traffic accident in Calgary.
Elias Friedman of the Antwerp Diamond Company reported a $100000 theft after two men bound gagged and robbed him in his Dundas Square office. The suspects disabled phones used his tie to restrain him and delayed discovery until police arrived after four minutes and an exit with the elevator.
STERLINGTON N Y AP Two Erie Railroad passenger trains collided head on killing five and injuring at least 22. The wreck occurred after one train failed to wait for the other as orders were not followed. Wreckers cut open a twisted coach where a man and a woman were reported dead. The dead included three crew members from the train that did not wait and a commuter train from Monroe N Y to Hoboken N J. The crash happened at an old freight station about 35 miles northwest of New York City when a freight train blocked the westbound track for Train No 53 bound for Port Jervis N Y from Hoboken. Train 53 was switched to the eastbound track and orders sent to hold Train No 50 at Suffern four miles west of here.
The narrator begins flying lessons at Manuel's hangar with instructor Ted Shea. They learn aircraft controls including rudder, ailerons, and elevators and perform a preflight external check on a Fleet Canuck, described as one of the safest planes with dual controls. Planes require DOT regulated maintenance after 50 hours and engine overhaul every 1000 hours.

RCMP widened search for Donald Sievers alias John Morrison in the Green Mountain area ten miles west of Penticton after a sighting by a three man unit. He is charged with wounding RCMP Corporal Ralph Brown at Kaleden’s fruit picker slaying site and is described as 58, five eight, 180 pounds with reddish brown hair and a tan, later reportedly headed east.
Premier Manning will broadcast an address Thursday at 6 45 pm over CHAT Medicine Hat radio stations. Reports suggest a snap election could be called while attention remains on the Progressive Conservative leadership convention this weekend. Opposition members see the move as shifting focus away from public discourse.
Empress hospital reports Alfé Campbell and his 10 year old son Allison in satisfactory condition after a propane tank explosion at their Buffalo home. They remain hospitalized for an undetermined period as doctors assess burn treatment including possible skin grafting.
