Osiph S. Renaud fifty five year old Windsor resident with wartime ties to Sir Arthur Currie was jailed for one year after stealing a bicycle in London Ontario. He claimed he thought the bike was his and that he was drunk when placing it in his car during the incident.

Quebec August 11 Lord Beaverbrook, visiting on the Empress of Britain, says he does not believe war in Europe is imminent. He notes Britain is highly prepared for war and praises the air arm as well trained.
Alder man Stewart Smith of Toronto was nominated as the Communist candidate for Toronto Spadina in the next federal election at a Wednesday night meeting. Smith was the only name before the delegates. Sam Factor, Liberal, is the present member.
Plain clothes officers watched the Cunard-White Star liner Mauretania after police learned two men plotted to blow her up. They monitored dock workers sightseers crew and passengers until departure for New York aboard the 34 000 ton ship launched in July 1939.
Prague reports the protectorate government ordering the surrender of all arms and explosives held by Bohemia and Moravia citizens within two weeks. German courts may impose death sentences for violations, and landowners become responsible for any hidden weapons on their property.
Ottawa reports that up to 10 000 Canadians are barred from using postal services for illicit activities or publishing illegal material. Chicago reports former newsboy M. L Annenberg and three associates indicted by a federal grand jury for willful income tax evasion. Annenberg allegedly evaded 3,258,808 in five years with 50 percent penalties and 6 percent interest.
J R Mackenzie of Redcliff was elected by acclamation chairman of the Independent Association of Medicine Hat in a well attended Park Hall meeting. James Connors was named vice chairman and K C Mackenzie secretary with Mrs E Downing treasurer. An executive of fifty was to be formed, half chosen last night, the rest later. The group aims to unite across political lines for better Alberta government.
Ottawa reports that Canada and New Zealand may extend the existing trade pact set to expire September 20. Talks between Trade Minister W. D. Euler and New Zealand Finance and Customs Minister Walter Nash ended with a plan to seek a further period of extension. Nash outlined NZ import controls while Euler noted the need to reduce abnormally high NZ imports from Canada where hardship occurs.
Ottawa August 11 Prime Minister Mackenzie King, after a cabinet council session, refused to offer new election prospects saying he would speak in Toronto if in a position to make a statement. He had been the guest of honor at a large Liberal banquet Tuesday night.
G G Thielman of Hague Saskatchewan was fined five dollars with three dollars costs for driving in a dangerous manner. While proceeding east on Third Street he swung right to south on South Railway Street, struck a parked car near Bradley's Shop, and could not explain the crash. Damage to the Bradley vehicle was settled out of court.
The United States Civil Aeronautics Authority said Howard Hughes asked for a high altitude trans Atlantic flight to Paris. He planned to use a Boeing 307 four motor Stratoliner and fly around the world expedition.
London and southeast England staged a major blackout as 500 enemy bombers and 60 000 air defences personnel simulated raids over 27 000 square miles. Sir John Anderson called the drill valuable though preliminary and 4 RAF fliers died during the week long manoeuvres.
Edmonton report notes Dr. W W Cross Alberta Health and Relief Minister signed a voluntary relief pact with the Dominion for the year ending March 31 1940 amid protests over terms. Agreement covers 40 percent of relief for 1200 transient Alberta families, with Alberta seeking 50 percent from the Dominion, costing the province about 200000 yearly.
