Flames belched from seven large gasoline and oil tanks at the American Oil Company refinery in South Baltimore. Four explosions injured seven firemen and sent about 100,000 residents fleeing as a dense smoke plume covered Hanover Street and surrounding blocks. Fire crews could only shield area with water walls while firefighters battled the blaze.
Spokane reports officials recounting a Cranbrook Edmonton Calgary elephant escape from the Sells Floto circus. The stampede wounded six, with 11 missing entries and two young elephants Myrtle and Charlie likely to perish if not recaptured. Seventeen handlers and trainer Cheerful Gardner pursue the wandering herd amid Canadian travel concerns.
Rose Lavell 44 was found dead with a battered head by her father Louis de Vaudreuil formerly of Ottawa on returning home to St Etienne des after a business trip. Police say the murder occurred while he was away and the walls of the room show signs of a struggle and spattered blood.

A second branch at First and Woodland streets yielded around $2,000.
Three known dead and two reported killed in two clashes between rum runners bootleggers and federal agents in Florida over five days. Five men were wounded two of them critically and one missing after a confrontation near Homestead when bootleggers opened fire on returning agents. Two of the dead were former Homestead police officers recently removed from office.
Lord Blyth's Blyth wood mansion in Stanstead Essex was badly damaged by fire this morning. The lord, 58, was being lowered from a window by his nephew Hon Rupert Blyth 21 when the rope slipped and he fell injuring his ankle. The housekeeper alerted others as Gye suffered burns and the cook fled the flames. five domestics escaped unhurt.
GRAENEINSPECTIONS Winnipeg August 11 report notes wheat with 56 cars of old crop, contract grades 10. Coarse grains total 34 including four cars of new rye. Last year 21.
Stockholm reports Sweden and Austria have signed an unlimited arbitration treaty making war illegal under all circumstances. It is the eighth such agreement the Swedish Government has with European neighbors, following pacts with Norway Finland Denmark Poland Belgium Czecho Slovakia and Germany.
Vancouver reports two youths, George Cristante and Lino Didin, drowned while bathing near Woodfibro, Howe Sound about twenty miles north of Vancouver. The bodies were recovered, and provincial police received the information.
Diplomatic representatives of Jugoslavia Roumania and Greece delivered a collective note to the Bulgarian foreign minister regarding activities of Bulgarian irregulars. The note’s substance is not released but it is not an ultimatum.

The funeral of Hon. George H. Boivin ex Minister of Customs took place in Grandby Quebec with sorrowing relatives and officials present. After mass at the parish church the body was laid to rest beside Mrs Boivin’s parents.
Captain Gerhard Folgero and three Norse companions sailed from Bergen on May 23 in a 42 foot boat named in honor of Lief Erikson. After a 6400 mile journey they put into harbor in Boston marking the first Norse voyage to North America since Erikson 900 years ago.
Messages from Labrador state that in the Sunday storm four vessels were lost at Lac Au Lorg. Many stages were destroyed and several motor boats swept away. No loss of life was reported. Present estimates of the Labrador fishery place the catch at about one third of that year due to the stormy weather.
Edmonton August 11 Mackenzie King urged a truce on personal attacks in party warfare and defended his resignation noting no censure. He criticized Meighen era actions, defended investigations into the customs department and insisted both government and opposition be judged by the people. Continued on Page Five.
Sudbury Ont Aug 11 Two prisoners Michael White and Fred King awaiting trial on theft charges knocked unconscious Turnkey George Moyer with an iron bar and escaped from the provincial police cells in the court house basement. The escapees remain at large and the turnkey is hospitalized with head injuries but not in serious condition.
Ten desperadoes were sentenced to death in Tyumen Siberia for the murder of over a hundred victims. Chief among them was Skaterina Pishinnova wife of the gang leader known to peasants as the Jack the Ripper of the Aural Mountains. She was accused of killing victims with an axe.
Four detectives engaged a band of criminals in New York today with gunfire and killings. Detective John Sinver III was shot and killed. a second detective was fatally wounded. and gunman Michael McDonald died after exchanges with Detective John P. Cook. The gang also robbed a Long Island bank vault of 16 000 dollars before fleeing with another getaway vehicle.
Ottawa Aug. 11 The Dominion Bureau of Statistics reports a 5 percent average population increase since 1921 in 20 prairie federal electoral districts across Manitoba Saskatchewan and Alberta. The total for these districts reaches 803826 versus 735308 in 1921 with results for the remaining 34 districts to come.
