President Kennedy announced border patrolmen would fly on selected domestic and international passenger flights armed and in plain clothes. The move follows recent hijackings and aims to deter air piracy while pilots stay protected.
In a midweek incident near Havana, a Cuban Airlines C-47 was hijacked in flight by counter revolutionary forces. A gun battle left three dead, including the pilot and one hijacker. another hijacker escaped after the crash in a sugar cane field twenty miles south of Havana. Cuban militia searched the area as authorities blamed U S backed antagonists. a French Algerian detainee led the seized Pan American DC-8 from Mexico to Havana. The same day a violent blast hit the Fin de Siglo store in central Havana signaling intensified counter revolutionary activity.
Federal complaint charges 27 year old Albert Charles Cadon with crime on the high seas and assault with a dangerous weapon after he seized Pan American Flight 501 a DC 8 en route Houston to Panama City. No one aboard was harmed and Cadon was later held in Havana as Castro released the plane back to Miami.
A chartered British airliner carrying 34 Lanfranc school pupils from Croydon crashed on a Norwegian mountainside near Stavanger during a coastal storm. All 34 boys aged 13 to 16, two schoolmasters, and three crew members died. Rescue teams found no survivors.
Explosively dry conditions force thousands of loggers miners and workers off jobs as closures sweep Vancouver Kamloops and Prince George districts. Two major fires near Prince George threaten mills while Kamloops records 96 fires with several outbreaks over 10 000 acres. No evacuations reported though homes came close to a blaze near Kamloops.
Secretary General Hammarskjold called a special General Assembly session for Aug 21 after Afro Asian and Soviet bloc support. The sole item will be the grave Tunisia situation since July 19 1961 with Tunisia seeking French withdrawal from Bizerte area and Sahara CLAIMS. France declined to participate in the debate per Maurice Couve de Murville.
A bus carrying 35 Canadian tourists crashed in the Alban Hills about 12 miles northeast of Rome injuring Jacques Tomassin a retired Canadian army officer from Shawinigan Quebec and his wife. They were taken to a clinic in Albano for treatment.
Rain barely slows about 20 forest fires in eastern Newfoundland as 1,000 firefighters, military helicopters, and air bombers battle walls of spruce. Evacuations continued around Bonavista Bay and Conception Bay areas with 2,000 residents at risk as fires expand across roughly 750 square miles of timber.
In New York a police man was stoned by teens while recovering the body of Samuel, 14, from the East River near the Brooklyn Bridge. He then chased the assailants and dived in to rescue Earl Lecenmier, 58, an accountant, as the group returned to seize his belongings.
Washington AP reports the September draft quota is 25 000 men the largest monthly total since the Korean War ending. All draftees will serve in the army and the cumulative drafted since 1950 reaches 2 640 950 as of September.
City crews begin removing a 140 ft section of the boulevard in front of the Federal Building on Second St SE to prepare a new public parking strip. Six stalls will be provided with 10 minute limits to ease parking for post office and public utilities users without blocking through traffic.
