LAS ANGELES Aug 9 AP A giant six motored flying wing with no fuselage and no sail was the picture two noted airplane designers painted today of the airliner of 1947. The wing will permit payloads of 100 persons and tons of baggage and mail, said Donald Douglas founder for the aircraft factory here that bears this name.
At a council meeting the street paving program was approved with the province providing 10 000 as its share and the city funding the other half. Preparations on Sixth Ave from Fourth to Aberdeen streets proceed for asphalt laying while North Railway St work continues. New street lighting will be installed along Second and Third streets and Sixth Avenue.

John W. Hugill, resigning as Attorney-General, declares he is opposed to the new bank licensing legislation he calls confiscation and repudiation. Speaking in East Toronto on Aug 10 he says such a course would break the constitution and provoke widespread Canada wide opposition. He plans to comment further after officially leaving office and notes the attorney general role is non partisan while urging expedients to improve living conditions.

More than 150 screaming picketers charged at police at the Bonner W plant of Dominion Textiles Ltd in Ontario Peterborough. Tear gas, baton blows, and shoves cleared a path for about 700 workers still on strike seven weeks. Officers detained several suspects including Alex Welch, organizer for the Committee of Industrial Organization, who shouted for British fair play.
A Dominion Bureau of Statistics report from Ottawa notes good yields of wheat in Manitoba but lower grades due to damage. Saskatchewan shows low yields where threshing occurred, Alberta prospects are variable, and harvesting is underway across Canada.
Washington August 10 The United States Agriculture Department estimated this year s crop totals for corn and wheat with winter wheat production set at 688 145 000 bushels. This compares to 549 018 000 bushels last year and includes 2 658 748 000 bushels of corn and 890 419 000 bushels of wheat.
One of the city’s largest glad displays unfolds at Rainbow Gardens in the 800A block Third Street. Over 15 000 bulbs planted this year are expected to yield 12 000 first class blooms. Gardens run by R McMullen and A Luton CP Jardin. They plan an even larger area next year. Cut flowers ship to Western Canada. a large Field order yesterday depleted blooms. Adjacent is McMullen’s garden with experimental work in flowers and hardy tree fruit.
A 14 passenger Eastern Air Lines plane bound from Chicago to Miami crashed near Daytona Beach after striking a newly erected power line. Four people were killed and five injured. Captain Stuart Dietz and co pilot Robert Reed among the dead. The crash marked Eastern Air Lines first fatal accident. Other reports say a Royal Canadian Air Force aircraft also crashed near Grand Rapids Manitoba.
