The report shows Liberal support at an eight point lead over the Conservatives, with 31 percent undecided. Prime Minister Trudeau cautions against immediate elections, while Tory aides warn a fall, possibly minority government, could hinge on socialist support and voter holidays.
At the premiers conference in Regina Quebec’s Claude Morin defends the monarchy as Ottawa seeks to broaden federal powers. Saskatchewan’s Roy Romanow says provinces back a unified position paper opposing Trudeau’s two phase timetable to patriate and reform the constitution by 1981.
Dr. Allan Warrack announced he will not seek re-election as Alberta MLA for Three Hills and will leave provincial politics. The 41 year old minister of utilities and telephones plans to return to teaching economics at the University of Alberta and will stay in the cabinet until the next election.
Castel Gandolfo closes its gates ending three days of public viewing of Pope Paul VI's body. About 60,000 mourners viewed the pontiff in the Swiss room before the coffin is driven to Vatican City. Security tightens for the motorcade to St. Peter's Basilica and the funeral.
Otto Lang, 46, sworn in as justice minister and retains transport portfolio and Wheat Board duties. He succeeds Ron Basford who resigned to spend time with family. Lang also proposes a constitutional amending formula involving Parliament and provincial consent or plebiscite as premiers meet in Regina.
Mayor Frank Rizzo called for the return of the death penalty after a MOVE clash left a policeman dead. Police leveled MOVE’s three story building with bulldozers and a crane, flushing out 12 adults 11 children 22 dogs and an unknown number of rats. Police found a dozen loaded weapons and 1600 rounds of ammunition. All adults were charged with murder.
Vancouver youths Chris Watts and John House hawked beer from a Chippendale table beside a $150,000 Point Grey home for three days. They bought cases in Blaine Washington during a local beer shortage, priced at two dollars a can. Police indicated likely no charges as most evidence was consumed.
