A forest fire near Mile 543 on the Alaska Highway grew from 12 000 to 30 000 acres over the weekend, threatening 15 families who packed belongings and prepared to evacuate. An Otter water bomber, tractors, and 70 men battled the flames as wind and sparks pushed danger toward local homes.
In Saigon a U S military spokesman said guerrilla snipers attacked forces marching to relieve the besieged Duc Co Special Forces camp. The siege near the Cambodian border has lasted 66 days with 12 Americans and 150 mountain tribesmen and Vietnamese in the camp. two Americans and 20 locals killed since June 3.

Coast guard investigates a deadly aboard the Seven Seas off Florida where three bodies were found and a fourth may have been thrown overboard.
