Niagara Falls Ontario lost its status as the safest city in Canada after a three year stretch without a traffic fatality ended by the death of three-year-old Yolande Ditoria. Medicine Hat now holds the title with 636 days without a fatal crash.

Lethbridge police report a head on crash on the S curve of the coulee hill west of Lethbridge. Four people were injured and taken to Lethbridge Municipal Hospital with facial lacerations, a chest injury, and minor cuts. Norman Fullglove was treated in Claresholm after ambulance transport. Investigations continue.

Alberta farmers face severe hail losses with about 1,600 claims filed to Aug 1, up from 421 the previous year. Saskatchewan and Manitoba report lighter losses, while August and September are typically the worst months in Saskatchewan.
Mrs. Ben Whitney of Bow Island recalls riding the first CPR transcontinental train from Montreal on June 26 1886 with a large send off and torpedoes in the crowd. The train reached Winnipeg on July 1 1886 marking the start of a major Western Canadian transport link.
