Winnipeg August 8 The body of William Knowler aged 28 who had been missing for days after a swim in the Red River was recovered last night. He had recently been married.
City solicitor O Neail reports to the council that John D Hunt Deputy Attorney General sent a letter announcing Co W Kealy's resignation as police magistrate of Medicine Hat and asks the council to recommend a successor. The council will consider the matter further at the next meeting.
CHAMPIONS Chief Hatcher wires from Victoria that the fire brigade boys won the championship in the wet test of the tournament. The committee barred the Hat boys from entering sports for the paid firemen's department. The boys also took two second places in the footraces yesterday.
Premier Asquith heard a delegation led by Millicent Fawcett president of the National Union of Women's Suffrage Societies and her non militant colleagues at his official residence. He praised constitutional methods but said no change of heart on granting women the franchise. He added the final word rests with the people of the United Kingdom.
Ottawa reports Hon Dr Roche minister of the Interior will leave Ottawa on August 15 for Winnipeg and spend several weeks visiting leading points in the three western provinces. He may extend the trip to British Columbia.

Duluth Minnesota August 8 There was little change in the strike. A daily loss of over 100000 impacts shipping miners on the Iron Range railroads and dock companies. Stagnation grips St Louis Bay as ore boats accumulate and go idle. Industrial Workers of the World failed to spread the strike to Two Harbors where ore movement remains normal despite agitation. Workers say they are satisfied with conditions and wages.
London Aug 8 the Grand Trunk announces payment in full of dividend end first and second preferred with 16000 pounds carried forward confirming cash distribution to shareholders and continuation of profits policy.
The twenty third annual report of the Medicine Hat General Hospital shows an increase in work and activity. The Vice President delivered the address in the president’s absence, noting progress and events in city health efforts. Continued on page nine.
Harvey Davis of Lincoln Nebraska camped at the land office bench for seventeen days and nights to secure a $4000 quarter-section four miles southeast of Winnifred. His patient stand, aided by his brother, allowed him to be first in line when the lot opened after the residence-required period expired. Ten others appeared but Davis claimed the coveted land with improvements already in place including a shack granary and thirty acres under breaking.
Hartman, a leper taken to quarantine cottages near St. Louis, escaped yesterday. He returned to his wife’s home in the city center, obtained money, and departed for an unknown destination.
J A Carson of St Pan is assistant superintendent of new construction for the Great Northern. He states a route survey exists to Lethbridge from Nelson and coal land purchases in Alberta are funded by the G N R. He says cheap coal drives expansion and lines into the wheat country may follow. Austria seeks to avoid Bulgaria's complete removal from central Macedonia. Russia also seeks revision while Britain Italy may align with Vienna and St Petersburg. Germany signals letting Austria lead, likely drawing France in.
In San Francisco on August 7 twelve jurors were sworn to try Maurey Diggs of Sacramento in the first case arising under the Mann White Slave Act. The government proceeded with its preliminary statement of the case.
Secretary Bryan after a White House conference says the United States sees no change in John Lind's mission to Mexico. Winnipeg Aug 8 Miss Mary Meade of Winnipeg feigned death to escape a loveless three year marriage with Chacery of Luxembourg Sask and to wed Reginald Salisbury of Maple Creek Sask. The ruse involved fake telegrams and a staged accident near Radisson, followed by long concealment and a staged reunion with her claimed husband.
