AP reports three consecutive nights of racial violence in Jersey City sparked by frustrated young Black residents. Witnesses describe bottles and gasoline bombs in street clashes as they vent with police amid harsh urban conditions and perceptions of unfulfilled promises.
The United Nations Security Council was summoned urgently by the United States over North Vietnamese PT boat attacks on U S ships in the Tonkin Gulf and U S retaliatory air strikes. Adlai Stevenson prepared to report on the action as the Soviet Union sought a postponement and faced unclear Moscow instructions.
