Venezuelan capital shuddered as nine hours of rioting left four dead and over 100 wounded. Police, troops, and tear gas battled demonstrators amid protests over jobs and a slum redevelopment plan. President Betancourt suspended immunity and vowed calm.
The Big Four foreign ministers end a 10 week conference on Berlin with a closing communique declaring the marathon talks useful for further negotiations. Gromyko Lloyd Herter and Couve de Murville warned that positions on certain Berlin points moved closer.
U.S. Secretary of State John Foster Dulles said the Soviet Union aims to push Western powers out of Berlin and deny freedom there. He urged that Soviet proposals show no real interest in improving Berlin and left open a possible return to talks later this year as Geneva ended.
The Southern Alberta Baseball League fined Medicine Hat Superiors 200 for using unregistered players as pitchers Glen Rediger and Linn Wallace in a 19 to 3 loss to Lethbridge White Sox in Lethbridge. Governor Pete Sereni attended the night game amid new lighting. Superior manager Tom Schechter vowed not to pay further fines.

A British foreign office spokesman said reports from the embassy in Vientiane indicate military equipment from Czechoslovakia and Communist China is being used in the Laos conflict between government forces and Communist rebels. The reports say fighting is ongoing.
Typhoon Ellen swerved northwest toward Okinawa homes. Winds of 115 mph cut communications with the island as about 50,000 American troops and civilians braced for the storm. The center was 23 miles east of Naha and Kadena bases, with landfall expected across central to northern Okinawa by mid morning.
In Geneva the Big Four foreign ministers reportedly agreed on how to restart stalled East West disarmament talks. French spokesman Pierre Baraduc quoted a Four Power communique saying ministers had a useful exchange on methods to advance negotiations. Details await consultations with other powers and UN Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjold.
Ottawa youths Richard Boudreau and Gerald Leclerc were sentenced for a July 10 bank theft at a Toronto-Dominion Bank branch. Boudreau received 3 years and 10 months in Kingston Penitentiary. Leclerc got 15 months definite plus eight months in reformatory. Police later found $71,559 hidden in a suitcase during a U.S. border arrest in California. Both had strong references and no prior records.
The fight between Mrs. Bertha Whyte and Ontario health authorities moves to the courts. Supporters seek a writ of habeas corpus to free a child from Whytehaven farm mission near Bowmanville. A hearing will decide fates of about 117 children moved last Friday, with Ms Whyte vigil outside a Scarborough home.
The Yomiuri reports Hirokicho Nagano 34 chief engineer of the Takuyo Maru died of leukemia possibly linked to radioactive rain from the 1958 Eniwetok tests. Nagano fell ill after July 1958 exposure and hospital admission on July 28 followed a hand wound.
Hurricane Dot brushed Hawaii with only outer winds and a harmless touch as it moved westward. Winds near the cyclone center reached about 130 miles per hour while the main island chain largely escaped damage or destruction.
Senate rackets committee reports Hoffa used 3 million dollars of Teamsters health and welfare funds to pay off Chicago underworld figures and the Dorfman family. It accuses Hoffa of arranging deals to benefit mob-connected interests and undermining union members since 1950. Additional findings accuse Max and Louis Block of siphoning funds from New York locals and A and P stores conspiring to pressure 10000 workers into a favorable contract. The panel notes ongoing disputes over court monitors.
In Neustday Am Ruebenberge Germany a cigar smoking rooster named Heinrich testified to prove the theft of chickens from a farmer. The bird’s show of evidence led to a four week jail sentence for the chicken thief as the owner’s trainer described.
The Little Rock School Board faced charges it moved up the opening of public high schools to force integration amid polio fears. Governor Faubus criticized the plan to assign six African American students to two previously white schools, while the board cited a pupil placement law and noted most students would attend Horace Mann High School.
Robert Raymond Cook, 22, appeared in a Fort Saskatchewan jail special court on remand until Aug. 11 after being charged with slaying his father Raymond Cook, his step-mother, and five siblings. Seven bodies were found June 28 in the Stettler Alberta family garage. He had been sent to Ponoka mental institution for observation, escaped July 10 during Alberta’s largest manhunt, was recaptured four days later, and held at the provincial jail since.
Snow fell on two fires 2000 feet up the mountains at the head of Bute Inlet about 125 miles north of Vancouver aiding firefighting efforts. The dampening trend followed 29 days with no measurable rain the province’s longest dry spell since 1951.
