Suffield Man Dies in Car Crash Involving Fire

A 1954 auto crashed on the No 1 highway near Hell, Sask. John E. Heisler 28 of Suffield CPR telegrapher died in the flaming wreckage shortly after 10 30 last evening. Passenger Ida Wager 36 Suffield-Ralston sustained injuries including a possible fractured pelvis. An inquest under coroner Dr E G F Skinner will determine cause of death.

Wheat board projects Western grain marketing near 600 million bushels

The Canadian Wheat Board said Western farmers can market about 600 million bushels of all grains in 1954-55, similar to last year. The board sees no reason for a drop in marketings and notes demand uncertainties but expects 600 million with some variation by market developments. Incomplete data show last crop year Westerns over 600 million, vs 845 million in 1952-53 and a 10 year average of 474 million.

Fishermen Show Signs Recovery After Bikini Blast

Eight New Polio Cases Reported in Alberta

Alberta health officials said the poliomyelitis tally rose to 206 for the week ending July 31, with eight new cases. Calgary added four cases, Fairview in Peace River district three, and Edmonton one. Measles led with 40 cases, followed by 13 mumps, whooping cough and rubella, and six scarlet fever cases.

Mis-Shapen Unmarried Mother Held With Lover for Death

A mis-shapen unmarried mother and her latest lover are held on homicide charges after her 2%-year-old son Joseph Mahoney was beaten to death. The boy, described as half starved with many welts, died after being beaten with a leather belt in a 1940s New York hotel apartment. The mother reportedly beat the child for wetting himself and then sought relief payments while the lover aided in the abuse and later helped notice the ill child.

Lucien Picard a 45 year old unemployed machinist was arraigned in Montreal on a murder charge in the slaying of Raymond Trudeau whose dismembered body was found last weekend A coroner jury had ruled him criminally responsible for the death and a preliminary hearing was set for August 12 The case drew a crowded coroner court scene as witnesses identified the body and described mutilation of the boy with parts found in beer cartons and a satchel in Picard's basement room PMID: None

Eight Dead and Thirty Injured In Pekin Distillery Fire

The Pekin Illinois distillery blaze at the American Distilling Co. prompted evacuation of nearby homes and civil defense calls as two explosions and fires raged. Eight may be dead with one known dead and seven missing. over 30 injured. Firefighters retreated from a warehouse blaze after a 68,000 barrel explosion damaged surrounding structures. UK Will Reject Stowaway Protest

Britain will reject Poland's protest over police actions aboard the Jaroslaw Dabrowski in the Thames last Saturday. Polish officials accuse Britain of brutality after police boarded the freighter to remove Antoni Klimowicz, a 26-year-old stowaway.
