United Nations announced that 78 towns in North Korea housing military installations are doomed and civilians should evacuate ahead of allied air raids. The program aims to spare noncombatant lives and show air superiority. At least two towns warned have been hit. Four North Korean jets were shot down and six damaged in aerial battles.

Fourteen California Communist leaders were convicted today of conspiring to teach and advocate violent overthrow of the United States government. The federal court jury had been out since last Thursday afternoon, the longest federal court trial in the Los Angeles jurisdiction, lasting six months from February 1 to August 1. The charges mirrored the New York case of 1949 where 11 top Communists were convicted after a nine month trial.
Montreal CP reports Railway Brotherhoods' Frank Hall says a three man conciliation board will be formed to settle a wage dispute affecting 125 000 non operating workers. Labor Minister Gregg will name one worker and one railway representative with hope for a chairman. A 45 cent hourly rise is sought effective Sept 1 when the contract expires.
Calgary reports its third poliomyelitis death in the current outbreak and three new cases in the city overnight. A 31-year-old RCaf flying officer from Station Claresholm died at Col Belcher hospital. new cases include two boys aged 12 and 9 and a 6-year-old girl. Total polio cases in Calgary and district reach 61, with 39 Calgarians and 22 from surrounding areas. Health officials urge closing summer camps and cancelling picnics to curb spread. city circus for under 16 is cancelled or restricted. No further cases in Medicine Hat today.
PEMBROKE CP A shopping trip ended in tragedy as five members of the Touscant family died in a level crossing collision near Petawa village ten miles north. Percy Touscant 30 Evelyn 25 and three sons Nelson 5 Leonard 3 Edward 2 killed Idella 7 injured. The car was hit by a slow freight train at an unguarded crossing and hurled about 70 feet. Mrs Touscant and the youngest child died on scene. the remaining boys died later at hospital. Father died six hours after the crash.
A greyhound bus left the road three miles east of Lordsburg and overturned after plunging 27 feet down an embankment Sunday night injuring six teen passengers.
Sixty eight Belgian soldiers absconded with five trucks and tried a walkout against the two year conscription term near Mons. Lacking reinforcements they surrendered after spreading anti draft and Communist Internationale chants. The mutiny spread to nearby towns before four trucks surrendered at a police barricade and the fifth returned to camp. The episode follows a wave of protests against the 24 month draft fostered by the conservative government.
Three ringleaders in the April riot at Southern Michigan prison were arraigned on kidnapping charges. Crazy Jack Hyatt 28 of Leamington Ontario Earl Ward 38 and James Hudson 44 were charged with kidnapping prison guards during the riot.
In Ottawa, a fire at the 85 year old parliament building damaged the roof of the main block and drenched its valuable library and other collections. Firemen fought the blaze for 12 hours as water soaked corridors and hundreds of thousands of books. Three firefighters were hospitalized.
Arthur Cameron, 47, Langley Prairie prospector farmer, endured seven days without food after slipping and losing his pack in the B C mountains north of Stewart. His partner W T Rowe hiked out after surviving the forest to fetch help and Cameron, emaciated and suffering rheumatism, was flown to Stewart for hospital care.
