In Pittsboro Mississippi a mob hanged Hode Bates from a bridge over the Halobusha River after his arrest for allegedly attacking a white woman. The incident followed tense days as local meetings addressed political issues and the Aberhart Social Credit plan faced opposition.
The administration's tax bill, projected to add 250 million to 270 million dollars in annual revenue, cleared the House of Representatives today and was forwarded to the Senate for consideration.
Vancouver reports the death of avid Sloan managing director of Pioneer Gold Mines of British Columbia Limited from injuries suffered in the Alta Lake crash on July 20. The crash killed Dean R. Brock, Mrs. Brock, and pilot William McCluskey. Sloan died after doctors failed to save him despite urgent care.
Pete Simpson’s car was found and items stolen from him on May 15. Arthur and Arnold Matt appeared in city police court charged with possession of stolen property. Arnold, previously convicted, received six months suspended sentence and other terms. Arthur was fined 25 dollars and costs with six months suspended sentence. W Vollendorf, arrested with the Matts, was fined 10 dollars and costs for vagrancy. fines paid.
Gerald Nicholson of Muskoka aged 34 was arrested in Windsor and brought to London Ontario charged as an accessory after the fact in the year old kidnapping of John Labatt the London brewer. Nicholson is the fifth man detained in the case with Meisner already serving 15 years and others awaiting trial. Warrants remain for Alberta Pegram who has not yet been apprehended.
The Osservatore Romano accuses the Nazi government of ongoing hostile spying on Catholic priests and criticizes a new decree authorizing police action against priests. The paper says church rights under the 1933 concordat are being eroded and asserts the church must defend itself when politics intrudes on worship.
The first spring wheat of the season arrived at Taber elevator on Monday. It graded No 1 hard and was a Rewild variety grown on the town's edge. Spring wheat cutting will be fairly general this week in lighter southern Alberta crop districts.
London journalist Dr. D. O. Soper discusses the public’s habit of asking embarrassing questions on Tower Hill. He recalls instances where he was asked if God controls the elements and why churches have lightning conductors. He also notes a temperance query about America and a man who had never been to America.
In Candia Crete thirty people including five police officers were wounded as a labor tied uprising broke out. Martial law was imposed and two destroyers with troops were sent to restore order. The strike is tied to Eleutherios Venizelos supporters and former uprisings last spring. Later peace was reported as government forces quelled skirmishes and strikers agreed to lay down arms.
Ottawa reports political fervor as election date and cabinet reorganization loom. A. G. Bury of Edmonton East is named district judge in northern Alberta, with further bench and Senate appointments anticipated. King outlines Liberal platform while Bennett ponders fresh cabinet.
Soviet trio led by Levaneftsky aborted a non stop Moscow to San Francisco mission over the Barents Sea due to a defective oil line. The plane landed near Leningrad after 875 miles from Moscow with 16,600 miles still to go to reach the North Pole. Co pilots were Baldykott and Lychencko. an official commission investigates the leak.
Aug. 5. Practically no common or bread wheat will be cut except for feed in at least 15 municipalities in the extreme south east corner of Saskatchewan. Minister J. G. Taggart said rusted wheat will be used for fodder with some farmers harvesting it for that purpose. Each municipality averages nine townships with about 300 farmers in the bad area.
Percy Hugh Belcher, a western pioneer who moved from England in 1878, died in Edmonton this week. He ferried freight and mails between Winnipeg and Edmonton from 1878 to 1882 and was named police magistrate at Grande Prairie in 1915. He retired in 1930.
The Calgary Economic Safety League addresses listener questions on Alberta electors issues. It notes Aberhart’s Social Credit Manual proposes wage payments in credit certificates instead of money and outlines how Dominion currency could be drawn into province coffers.
Geneva August 5 After four days of talks the League of Nations council opened a route to peace between Italy and Ethiopia though still hampered by major issues The plan follows the 1906 Britain France Italy treaty on Ethiopian spheres and does not bind Ethiopia who will be consulted as progress is made Paris talks are to be joined by representatives of the three powers within 10 days with Eden reporting to the council later page four continues
General Sir Thomas Astley Cubitt and Lady Astley Cubitt wrap up a ten day visit at Banff Springs hotel. They plan a leisurely route through the Rockies toward Vancouver Victoria and Alaska. Sir Thomas praises the Banff course and notes upcoming tournaments on the roof of the world with trophies from the Prince of Wales and the Earl of Willingdon.
Rt. Hon. W. L. Mackenzie King, federal Liberal leader, will deliver the third in his coast-to-coast radio address series tonight from 6 to 6 30 p.m.
London dispatch says Japan signed a contract for a heavy shipment of arms and ammunition to modernize the Ethiopian army. A Japanese military and commercial mission was said to be ready for dispatch to Ethiopia. Rome reports claim Italy has developed a new death ray able to annihilate advancing troops and halt land and air motors, with tests demonstrating its capabilities.
Western drought relief projects funded by the dominion department of agriculture have begun under the drought rehabilitation program. W L Jacobson reports 4600 applications from farmers and ranchers for free engineering aid and grants up to 350 dollars for irrigation, 150 for stock watering dams, and 50 for dugouts. C M Moore leads the Medicine Hat district with 22 field engineers aiding Swift Current and Medicine Hat areas.
The Alberta Health Insurance Act creates a commission for the province with Hon. Geo. Headley as chairman, Dr. J E Archer of Lamont as vice-chairman, and Dr. M R Bow as deputy minister of health. Members serve without remuneration and take effect from July 24.
Dr. Alan Roy Dafoe reports the Dionne quintuplets, via their physician, are now self supporting. The babies have about 45 000 in bonds and cash, with contracts likely to add 50 000 more. Public belief of a 200 000 fortune is disputed. They have spent much of their own money in 14 months.
