Five thousand lives are believed lost as a typhoon last Wednesday devastated Swatow 250 miles northwest of Hong Kong. The harbor flooded with wreckage and dead bodies, nearly all houses damaged, and residents driven from their homes by the disaster.

Charles Stewart ordered Slipper to report on drilling activities.
Quebec announces two representatives will join the Central Fuel Board with appointments set for next week. The coal comptroller will also be named as part of the shuffle, announced by the premier before departure for Silver Duloup.

Walter D. Martin a Big Bend Land Co salesman died after his car plunged from Hatch road near Palouse highway. Officials say he cut his throat with a razor to simulate an accident, finding a razor case near the scene as evidence. Deputy prosecutors and sheriff officials hold it was suicide staged as an accident.
Winnipeg reports Manitoba's new cabinet under John Bracken will be sworn in Tuesday next after an official call from the lieutenant governor to form a ministry. Bracken will prepare the slate by Tuesday and keeps the colleague list confidential.
Paris reports the French government has ordered penalties to seize German properties in France and collect payments on pre war debts to French citizens. The measures cover war loss accounts in Alsace Lorraine and visa indemnities under the 1921 arbitration, with no military action involved.
Commissioner Fream of Calgary, who was due to arrive Monday, will instead come a week later on Monday August 14th.
A Walsh resident writes that on Friday July 28 Philp Schlacht, a farmer west of Walsh, marketed between four and five hundred bushels of 1922 fall rye at a local elevator. The crop yielded a little over two bushels per acre, with 58 pounds per bushel.
