George Holmes, program director of Airshow Alberta 81, says there will be no further airshows in Medicine Hat after attendance figures showed a large financial loss. The exact deficit remains undetermined as figures are totalled.
Holmes reports a 65,000 gate total over two days and a 15,000 expected loss. Attendance was 6,600 Saturday and 7,400 Sunday with 33,000 and 37,000 in gate receipts, while sponsors and concessions totalled 20,000. The show drew many out-of-town attendees and lacked local support, despite strong performances and careful budgeting.
The Canadian dollar fell to 80.52 U S cents in noon trading after a morning rally, sliding from Monday’s 80.53 and hitting 80.71 as traders warned of further volatility. Analysts cited lack of Ottawa comment and fears of panic selling if the dollar weakens toward new laws, with Chicago futures also dropping.
Robert Poli of PATCO says members will not return to work amid a federal strike against air traffic control. Judges Greene and Platt levy combined fines of about 7.15 million daily if the walkout lasts, while Reagan vows firings and officials push to keep traffic flowing.

About 10,000 Algoma Steel workers voted 58 percent for a three year contract ending a weekend strike. Wages rise $1.50 first year and 40 cents in each subsequent year plus a cost of living allowance, lifting average pay to about 15.13 an hour. controversy over vacation changes and a lingering Stelco dispute with 16,000 Stelco workers on strike continues.
