Miners Rescued After Nine Days Trapped
In Champagne near CHAMPAGNOLE France nine miners trapped since July 27 were brought to the surface today. Foreman Andre Martinet led the group from the underground pocket as a giant drill created an escape shaft. First to surface was Andre Jacques 28 dazed but unharmed. Charles Peyronnel 44 showed weakness yet waved to onlookers. Rescue prioritization sent those in worse shape up first.

Bombs thrown in racial riots in Jersey City
In Jersey City New Jersey two gasoline bombs were thrown during daytime violence amid two nights of Negro rioting. Police report six fires in an abandoned building and numerous property damage incidents. Twenty people arrested and 44 injured including two shot as hundreds of officers patrolled the Negro area after the attacks.

Riot prompt yields 36 arrests at Windsor dance
Windsor Ontario dispatch reports 36 Canadian and United States youths arrested after a near riot at a dance attended by about 4,000 Negroes and whites. Rhodesian Troops Rout Lumpa Ambush Near Lundazi
Northern Rhodesian and civil authorities repelled a Lumpa sect ambush at a fortified village in the northern province. Ten Lumpas were killed and six security forces injured. Troops occupied the village as airlifts moved to Lundazi area to pursue Lumpa prophetess Alice Lenshina. The government, after a deadly Lumpa rampage, banned the sect and ordered deceased or alive capture. Prime Minister Kaunda warned against Lumpa meetings and signaled a possible lift of the ban in about a month if carnage ends.
