In Van Wert Ohio 14 year old Danny Clem admitted in juvenile court that he tied two dogs to railway tracks with a 17 year old friend and waited as a train killed them. Judge Cathryn Harrington sentenced Danny to seven years in the boys industrial school with a recommendation against early release. The older boy’s case is being handled separately.
Calgary mayor Don Mackay said he will serve as mayor despite Turcotte inquiry findings that he and three city officials accepted gifts from companies doing business with the city. A council vote failed to force his resignation as the stormy meeting drew crowds and criticism.
Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev will tour America next month, with a Soviet Embassy official noting headlines will adapt to American style. Diplomats say he has humor about naming conventions and will be briefed on U.S. newspaper practices.

A mountain fire roared from fire lines and moved three miles toward the Mojave Desert foothills near Crestline. By dawn it lay six miles from 3,000 cabins above the He ia valley communities of Hieperia and Apple Valley, with Cedar Springs two miles away.
Rains ended forest fires in Newfoundland and Quebec as about 1,000 people evacuated return home. A new blaze roared at a pulpwood pile in Desbiens Quebec, while Baie Verte residents, mostly children, were evacuated by ship before rescue became unnecessary. In Gaspe, 95 square miles burned affecting over 600 villagers. The worst blaze centered near St Bernard des Lacs.
In Ottawa today a gang robbed a supermarket manager in the parking lot, escaping with 15000 in cash and cheques. Police, armed with descriptions and the getaway car license, soon arrested two men. A third fled from the moving car into brush carrying a white canvas sack.
