Berlin reports progress as Jules Camban the French ambassador and German Foreign Secretary Jon Walchter reach common ground on general settlement terms for the Franco German Moroccan dispute. Details remain to be settled.
Dominion Trades and Labor Congress organizer Mr. George Howell visited the city to gauge local conditions and drum up support for a large Hat labor delegation to Calgary for next month’s Trades and Labor convention. He expects a weeklong session and a major Calgary event. Howell notes Fernie miners rejected the Gordon report, signaling ongoing struggles, and plans an excursion to Banff with the convention. He left for Calgary at noon and will return later this month for the local council meeting.
Cherbourg reports aviator Auburn locating submerged submarines from airplanes. In two flights, first at 406 feet he found two boats a mile and a half apart. second at 200 feet located boats submerged eighteen feet deep moving at full speed. A third test showed submarine crews could not see the plane from 3000 feet.
Fort William mayor S C Young, after visiting Hat city officials, completes a major land deal totaling around 140000 dollars. He buys 1100 lots in Riverdale, 890 in McLellan area, and 700 with George Lund, spanning blocks 14 to 24. The purchase signals optimism for Fort William’s growth and regional business leadership.
Tommy Sharpe an apprentice at the News office went on vacation with his parents in Pincher Creek. A letter from his parents states he has been stricken with poisoning and will be unable to return to work soon. Zamona, a violinist from New York, reenters gaps.
Last night a fire at the Rosery building on east Montreal Street caused about 3500 dollars in damage. The blaze started in the storeroom above the boiler house and spread quickly. investigators consider a painter dropping a match a possible cause, though no definite origin is established. Mrs Cribbis of the south of Indian Head was killed in a runaway as her husband and four children rode home from Mr Bailey's farm eight miles north. The husband was bruised and the children unhurt. The body to be taken to Hepworth Ontario tomorrow.
Walter Brown, a lineman for Saraguay Electrical and Water Co., was found dead on a pole after an electrocution in Pan street yesterday. Police and company officials investigated the incident and ruled it accidental.
Fort William Ont August 4 Edward Irving railway switch foreman for Canadian Pacific Railway was killed late last night while riding the rear of a backing engine. The engine backed onto a switch being torn up and Irving fell under the engine. He was single and about 28 years old.
Montreal dispatch reports Auguste Le roux was found not guilty of murder in the death of J. B. Bisson after a heated religious discussion. The coroner's jury returned a verdict of justifiable homicide, stating the dead man initiated the trouble.
Local businessmen fund and support the Imperial Home Reunion Association to bring British families to Canada. Seven families, 28 people, have been assisted so far with bond-backed funding and ticketed passages. Mr. W. Cousins leads efforts. 26 businessmen have bonds of 250 dollars each. The Board of Trade meeting urged more joiners and promises a follow up by secretary R. M. Napier.
