Governor Connally met Texas law enforcement to discuss the Charles Whitman shootings that killed 16 and wounded 31. A brain tumor found during an autopsy was cited as a possible factor in his actions.
Austin police said Charles J. Whitman, who killed his wife and mother before fatally shooting 13 at the University of Texas tower, left three notes. Police chief Miles said Whitman appeared rational yet wildly distressed and sought an autopsy to uncover the cause of his actions.
Don Hawthorne, chair of the centennial committee, said the $80,000 museum project won formal approval from senior governments providing $25,000 each in grants. E. H. Abell praised the committee's energy, while some locals criticized the effort as not moving forward.
Prime Minister Pearson condemned premature publicity over federal tax equalization proposals disclosed at a Toronto premiers' meeting. He noted provinces had long known details including conditions on federal medical care payments, while Quebec Ontario pressed for money with no strings attached and Alberta objected to compulsory features.
