Geoffrey Shakespeare announces in the House of Commons that Britain will add 180 vessels to the 1989 naval construction plan. The total cost is about 51.48 million dollars. Included are 107 mines and ASW trawlers and 56 whale packet type ships for patrol and anti-cone work.
London reports Prime Minister Chamberlain says Britain is in close contact with France and the United States on the Far Eastern situation. Ambassador Sir Robert Craigie was instructed to lodge a vigorous protest over anti British agitation in North China and to note a violation of understandings from the Tokyo Anglo Japanese conference. Troop movements indicate Japan shifting garrisons to Manchukuo and toward Canton and Nanking.

Victoria August 2 British Columbia issues a government order reducing wholesale gas prices effective August 7 and fixing the spread to retail prices. In Vancouver the cut lowers pump prices by three cents per gallon to 24 cents for standard grades including a seven cent tax. The order sets wholesale rates by district from 19 to 30 cents a gallon and caps the maximum wholesale to retail spread at five to six cents depending on region.
Dr J L Robinson announced at the meeting’s close in the Arena that the New Democracy federal candidate for the Medicine Hat riding would be chosen at a Social Credit room meeting on September 2 at 10 30 a m.
Kilmer E. Roper of Edmonton was elected president of the Alberta CCF at Edmonton as the federation adopted a new constitution. William Irvine, retiring president, is named CCF candidate for Caribou BC. Henry G. Young and Miss Mary Crawford elected vice president and treasurer respectively. A nine member executive will appoint the secretary later.

No Irishmen among those held were deported and two others face deportation. Peter De Vito, once a wealthy New York gangster, was jailed in Brooklyn.
Finance Minister Charles A. Dunning offered to resign to Prime Minister Mackenzie King as he prepares a health‑seeking trip to Europe. King later stated the resignation was not accepted and Dunning was ordered to rest, with him remaining in the government to return when health allows.

Royal Canadian Mounted Police under Corporal W B Dobbin seized twenty gallons of moonshine liquor, making gear, and a still from Peter Greenstein's home nine miles northeast of Medicine Hat. Greenstein pled guilty to possessing a still for spirit manufacture under the Excise Act and awaits sentence next week after a prior clean record.
London August 2 Britain faces a possible general election in November as Parliament plans a three week sitting after October 3 before dissolution. Prime Minister Chamberlain favors an election this year if international events allow. The Commons backed the adjournment motion with a 250 to 132 vote of confidence after a long debate.

Three theories include a robbery murder plot or an outsider involvement and a fourth person as suspect with $700 allegedly in house. A post mortem is planned to determine cause of death.
MILAN August 2 mock invasion exercises opened large scale Italian maneuvers along the northwestern frontier from France. The red force attack was repulsed after initial success but enemy aviators penetrated anti aircraft defenses and inflicted theoretical damage behind the lines. In Germany at Muenster defense lines held firm after mock air battles, official reports said. The aim was to test Germany anti aircraft equipment.
