The first half of fiscal year 1937 shows total tax and utility revenue around $217,000 for taxes and $267,796 for utilities, with general revenues near $19,387. Overall collections lag 1936 by about $14,500, offset by a lower budget for 1927. Current tax receipts exceed 1936 modestly, while arrears total about $504,359 with $2,600 less than the prior year.
Lord Tweedsmuir completed the river voyage from Waterway to Aklavik setting an all time river speed record. He will fly to Herschel Island and back to Edmonton, a projected 1,600 mile air trip the longest for a Canadian Governor General. He and passengers also used a ship's post office, with Col. R. Reid named postmaster at the Mackenzie River post.
The city starts paving on Sixth Avenue between Fourth Street and Aberdeen Street under a 50 50 federal city match grant of 10000 each. Two blocks will be asphalted now and five more on North Railway Street later, pending Ottawa approval. Mayor Bullivant said formal approval from the federal government is still awaited.

Edmonton Aug 3 The Alberta Social Credit Planning Board recommendations will be drafted into legislation. The speech from the throne opened a special session led by Lieut Governor Bowen as the government aims to plug constitutional loopholes and guard against court decisions affecting the social credit financial system.
U S War Department reports a Panama defense post located the Pan American Grace Airways flying boat thirty miles northeast of Cristobal but found no signs of life among eleven passengers and three crew. The vessel had departed Guayaquil heading for Balboa when it disappeared.
Rene Pelletier, Social Credit member of Parliament for Peace River, loses two sons Reneé aged 8 and Donald aged 7 who drowned in Smoky River as their father fished upstream in Alberta. They will be buried in FaHler on Wednesday.
Emilie Dionne, one of the quintuplets, is diagnosed with a mild upper respiratory infection not linked to the hospital staff. She is isolated from her four sisters at Dafoe hospital with a dedicated nurse, and doctors expect recovery in a few days.

Edmonton Aug 3. Social Credit caucus in Alberta Parliament distributes a new loyalty pledge binding members to support Social Credit ideas of Major Douglas and to aid its introduction while avoiding criticism of the Aberhart government. The move follows a prior pledge signed by 49 of 63 members.
A 500 file survey by the Lethbridge Herald shows southwestern Alberta districts harvesting the best wheat since 1928. Yields range from 40 to 50 bushels per acre to as high as 88.5 bushels in irrigated zones, with Magrath Cardston Spring Coulee and Pincher Creek reporting top crops. Harvesting is underway and shipments on the Lethbridge railway division are projected near 18 million bushels, versus 6 million in 1936-37.
Planes bomb Chinese main force near Hopei Shantung border as a Japanese infantry column with artillery and tanks presses southward to halt the Central government advance.
