British troops penetrate three miles of a five mile front at 2 PM today while French gains are described as a turning point in the campaign. Guiseancourt has fallen and German retreat accelerates as the pursuit continues.
Allied forces advance along the Aisne Marne line amid heavy rain, press the German salient north of Vesles forest, and seize key heights and villages. French and American troops encircle Ville-en-Tardenois and claim rising prisoner totals as operations widen north of the Oureq.
In Vancouver between 4 000 and 6 000 union workers will drop tools at noon and suspend work for 24 hours in protest of Albert Goodwins death during a draft arrest. Affected are street railway, longshore, boiler maker, shipyard and metal trades. carpenters and painters are idle due to a separate strike. Postal workers continue at work. Constable Dan Campbell faces murder charges.
London reports Maxim Gorky, noted Russian writer and revolutionary, has been arrested by the Soviet government investigation committees. The same dispatch says Gorky’s paper is permanently suppressed.
Washington reports the Austrian supreme command dismissed those responsible for the disaster in Albania and appointed Gen. Welst Bali to command the forces opposing the Italian armies, per a cable from Rome. Details remain unclear as the Austrians restructure command after the setback.
London Aug 1 Canadian Premier Sir Robert Borden spoke at a banquet in his honor about imperial preference and the imperial war conference. He described three classes of resolutions and praised the conference for its results and the understanding among dominions. He noted secrecy due to world war complexities and rejected that the conference considered imperial preference this year.
American forces fought a closing encirclement to trap and overwhelm Prussian defenders in Seringes village north of the Marne. The clash was brutal with small arms and bayonet combat, ending in heavy losses and a cease of ferocious fighting as silence fell.
The Medicine Hat post office strike ends as strikers return to work after Ottawa’s directive. Postmaster Collier reinstates the old staff and discharges strikebreakers. Letter carriers resume routes today and tomorrow at usual times. temporary workers were paid only for actual days worked.
Washington says Japan has accepted the American plan to aid the Czech-Slovaks now operating in Siberia. After exchanges between Tokyo and Washington, doubts were cleared and the plan of operation will be implemented promptly.
London Aug 1 The Privy Council dismissed with costs the appeal of Regina City versus McCarthy. The case centered on whether a person of minority faith with a public school supporter should have their name entered as a public school supporter under provisions of the School Act, the Assessment Act and the City Act. The Lords affirmed the government board ruling and the supreme court opinions.
