Ottawa reports rebate applications for the 10 cent per gallon federal excise on gasoline will be available Sept 2 at post offices. Farmers fishers and bulk buyers may qualify for full refunds, with forms mailed to postmasters by mid August and distributed on a one time basis.
Dr. Charles Allard of Allarco Developments said city council knew gas price trends when signing the 10 year AGCL Cancarb contracts for a Methanol plant in Medicine Hat. He argued the contract closed August 1 1972 reflected rising prices and that opening contracts now would hurt plant viability and investment in Alberta petrochemicals. He urged respect for contract sanctity and warned against deterring future capital projects.
Canada barely participates at a 35 nation security summit in Helsinki as Brezhnev and Tito shape discussions. Officials report Canada was not privy to decisions on a new economic summit or Cyprus talks, while Cyprus Turkish clashes heighten tension.
Washington sources report a developing agreement to dismantle some agricultural trade barriers. The plan would remove quotas on Canadian cattle hogs and pork in exchange for lifting Canadian limits on U S cattle imports. Canadian egg restrictions provoke calls for retaliation.
At a European summit Trudeau said a voluntary move toward the developing world could avert a rich poorer clash at the UN next month. He noted signs of moderation in non aligned countries and discussed safeguards on nuclear technology with Palme, Ceausescu, Schmidt, and Brezhnev.
Edmonton CP reports on a provincial inquiry into a 1973 gift of 3000 vials of Brown Swiss semen to Brazil. CSBSI chairman Dr. Fred Day spoke of sensing wrongdoing involving semen from Dr. Glen Purnell, then deputy agriculture minister, while others described payment arrangements and the source of the shipment. The probe, led by Judge S V Legg, adjourned to August 5.
At Helsinki the Prime Minister and the US President shared a bowl of strawberries during a break and spoke about nuclear matters. Ford delivered a speech praising peaceful nuclear energy while warning against proliferation and noting Canada’s neighborly ties.
