Ottawa reports a 0.7 point rise in the cost of living index for June to 1880, the second consecutive monthly advance after a December peak. Food prices led the gain with eggs beef lamb and pork lifting the food sub-index to 239.5 while clothing and home furnishings declined slightly and rents fuel and light and miscellaneous stayed flat.
Parliament in London ratified the Bonn conventions to end Allied occupation and integrate West Germany into the European army. The House of Commons vote was 293 to 253, with Labor attempts to postpone rejected. Foreign Undersecretary Nutting defended early ratification against Russian negotiations concerns.
Calgary health officials say four new polio myelitis cases bring the Calgary area total to 48 and Alberta total to 88. Five people have died from the disease. Dr. L C Allen says Calgary theatres should ban attendance of children under 16 and urges parents to keep under 16 away from public venues. Cadets from Lethbridge and Taber will be barred from the Abbotsford air cadet camp due to the polio situation.
Winnipeg reports crop advance satisfactory in Manitoba with Saskatchewan and Alberta showing promising conditions. Wheat headed 95 percent in Alberta and 98 percent in Saskatchewan while Manitoba is all headed. Harvesting starts in Manitoba and barley cutting occurs in southern districts. weather remains sunny and warm with minimal frost and adequate moisture across provinces.
The CCF filed for a Supreme Court recount in Vancouver Burrard after losing by 246 votes to Bert Price of Social Credit. The move seeks to delay formation of a caretaker BC government pending court action. Three BC Court of Appeals justices ruled they lacked jurisdiction for the county court recount appeal.
Gen. Mohammed Naguib announces the army will withdraw from political life after ousting King Farouk, calling for a purge of corruption while a Wafd-led push seeks revival of parliament and rejection of Western defence plans in the region. The move follows his abdication ultimatum to Farouk and affirms government rule under the constitution.

The first day of advance voting in the August 5 provincial election shows 57 ballots at city hall in the afternoon and 13 at night, with 88 advance certificates issued by J Marsh. Voting runs 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. in 16 polling places across 41 subdivisions, inside council chambers and nearby locations. Candidates include Dr J L Robinson and Dr Lyle Wyatt. Edmonton reports 367 votes cast on day one, up 116 from 1948.

Ronnie Buettner, son of Crescent View district residents, drowned in Seven Persons creek after a three and a half hour rescue attempt. Fire department inhalator and CPR failed. he was recovered by Constable John Judges and taken to hospital where efforts continued for more than four hours. Survived by parents a sister Carol and brother Eugene. Funeral planned for Monday.

Ground gains came amid heavy rains and ongoing air offensives with 200 Chinese Reds driven from mud slopes.
