A collision of ore trains at the Allouise docks killed three men and fatally injured two others with many more hurt. About 250 dock hands quit in protest as investigators blame careless switching. Ambulances and doctors rushed to the scene while widows and line workers reacted in chaos.
In San Francisco on August 1 Secretary of War Garrettson outlined plans for a large volunteer force to back the regular army and for training every enlisted man to become a useful citizen after his service. He spoke at a luncheon hosted by the chamber of commerce before his Portland-bound tour of Pacific defenses. He urged youth training as patriotic duty and said soldiers should transition to civilian work by age 25 or 26 to aid industry and government.
In Pittsburg representatives from engineering automobile and other societies met to form a national organization. The goal is a thorough scientific study of the petroleum industry including origin geology statistics production and transportation to conserve products and expand uses for fuel and other purposes.
Seventeen year old German lad Rudolph confessed to Superintendent Wroughton that he shot and killed his 14 year old companion Carl Mall at Pierce in the Macleod Valley Alberta. He also shot another companion Fritz Maurer who was seriously wounded. Rudolph was arrested and said the weapon discharged during handling.
Charles Moore, president of the Panama International Exposition, says Britain has not declined definitively to join the 1915 fair. He cites ongoing communications and expects a satisfactory adjustment, predicting Britain will exhibit with a large foreign trade display and assist in the event.
Washington reports indicate the United States faces foreign protests over Mexico and protection of its subjects. Nations including France Germany Britain and Italy show military postures near Vera Cruz and the Mexican coast. Jacob Gall fax was whitewashing a cattle guard on the CPR main line east of Moose Jaw when the westbound Imperial Limited struck him. He was hospitalized here and it is feared he will not recover. He is an Austrian with no local relatives.
London August 1 David Lloyd George chancellor of the exchequer addressed about 10 000 at Carnavavon urging democracy against the house of lords and calling for its abolition in a speech that spares no rebuke of the peers.
The National Association of Organists began its annual convention in Ocean Grove New Jersey with a strong turnout. Sessions run three days and feature recitals and concerts by leading American organists.
Kenora Ontario August 1 Col Orde of Minaki was fined 50 dollars and costs in the magistrate's court for acting as a Justice of the peace without filing affidavits of qualification and Allegiance. The charge stemmed from the wrongful arrest of Messrs Munsér and Crosby at Minaki.
In Saskatoon the 105th Fusiliers faced a flag episode when a girl waved an American flag at a bugler during a parade. The bugler seized the flag broke the staff and trampled it. he was court martialed and discharged, later reinstated amid pressure from the band as they prepared for a big parade. Jingoistic demonstrations followed with uniformed men marching near the armories bearing a Union Jack and singing God Save the King and Rule Britannia.
Col George Brodie founder of the 31st Grey Regiment died in Owen Sound age 91. A native of Suffolk England he leaves three daughters and two sons including Gifford Brodie of British Columbia.
July 1913 building permits total 840 720, up from 662 620 in July 1912. For seven months ending July 31 1913 permits amount to 2 206 935, vs 1 658 234 a year earlier. Projects include Elm Street School Dominion Grocery Co Medicine Hat Brick Co and Canada Cement Co facilities with several residences valued seven to eight thousand dollars each.
Donations rose to 1225 dollars for the Firemen’s Fund with forty dollars more and an additional 200 secured through a lacrosse game. The fund supports the athletic team representing the department at the Victoria meet as they depart for the coast to face Alpite.

In Winnipeg on August 1 Mrs. David Wienstein a 28 year old Russian Jewish woman was found dead in bed with a bullet wound to the temple and her seven month old baby Fanny unharmed but bloodied. Her maid Victoria Romanowska and a dismissed helper Mary Manastaka are in custody as investigation continues.
Calumet Michigan August 1 forces tightened around shaft houses amid plots to dynamite property. Reports say explosives vanished from Hancock mine power house and dynamite found on a prisoner at Red Jacket. The third infantry hospital corps was mounted as reserve cavalry, with battery A moved from Quincy to Calumet to reinforce posts.
Calgary finance committee rejects paying 6 12 per cent on treasury notes after Chicago mayor Sinnott proposed buying 500 000 in treasury bills at that rate. City says not pressed for money and aims to protect credit by matching London rates. Regina prepares for real estate men visiting for a city tour and banquet at exhibition grounds with plans for at least 60 visitors.
