Laurier LaPierre, ousted co host of This Hour Has Seven Days, calls CBC President Al Ouimet contemptuous of truth unless he substantiates recent accusations. He issued the statement Thursday night criticizing the CBC.
Prime Minister Pearson plans a prompt meeting with CBC President J Alphonse Ouimet to discuss the producers strike threat linked to the This Hour Has Seven Days controversy. A two page statement from LaPierre accuses Ouimet and spokesmen of sneer innuendo and lies to uphold management decisions.
Former Canadian trade minister George Hees testifies to being indiscreet in four meetings with Gerda Munsinger. He denies any impropriety and says accepting her statements was a mistake, with no aid given for a Bonn embassy job.
Ottawa reports a possible CBC strike as producers and CBC administration clash over cohost removals and an inquiry. Telegrams from Tom Koch demand suspending host removals and an inquiry by Guy Coderre, with mediation floated by Prime Minister Pearson. Rhodesian police report seven African National Union members killed near Salisbury after a gun battle 85 miles north. Chinese weapons and Russian grenades found. arrests cited as having terrorist training in China. The group reportedly crossed from Zambia by night after briefing by Chitepo. Prime Minister Smith vows no concessions on principle in talks with Britain.
Ald. Earl Smith charged Arena Gardens was mismanaged by private parties and urged turning it over to public-spirited citizens. Deputy Mayor Os bore called such turnover a schmozzle. The recreation commission urged real budget scrutiny and more authority as it advised on 1966 capital expenditures including pools at Crescent Heights and Nor wood and Arena renovations.
RCMP Commissioner George McClellan testified that Prime Minister Pearson asked for any scandalous information about MPs in the last decade during a late November 1964 meeting. The inquiry heard Pearson wanted the file on Gerda Munsinger and said he should see it. Protests by MPs over Pearson seeking RCMP data were noted as possible.
In Santo Domingo six Dominicans were wounded when U S troops at a bridge checkpoint fired on demonstrators protesting the American intervention. Two boys aged 14 and 15 were among the injured. two others were in serious condition. Demonstrators near the U S Embassy also set fire to flags as thousands gathered for the one year anniversary of the troop landing.
Premier Manning and Lesage inaugurate Alberta House in the Place Ville Marie building as Nova Scotia and Quebec expand tourism offices.
