The editor apologizes to crossword puzzle enthusiasts in the city and district for a week without puzzles. The newspaper relies on a syndicated service that mails in the puzzles, which did not arrive this week. Puzzles will resume regularly starting Monday.
Calgary Premier Manning says the attorney general will act on bona fide cases of distributing obscene and salacious literature when brought to attention. He responds to a city council resolution calling for stricter enforcement of obscenity laws.
Premier Duff Roblin unveiled Manitoba's 1964 budget with record revenues of 136,215,633 and expenditures of 156,061,24. A new tobacco tax four cents per pack and a marked gasoline plan for farm and fisheries use were announced, with revenue projections of 3.5 million from tobacco and exemptions for commercial gasoline.
Work crews erected a temporary line around the derailment of 26 box cars on the main line of the Canadian Pacific Railway nine miles west of Fort William Ontario.
In Ottawa the new Liberal cabinet and U S representative Christain Herter discussed expanding international trade and a Kennedy round of tariff talks. A Medicine Hat delegation was invited to Ottawa to discuss Hat airport with Transport Minister George McIlraith next week amid runway and by pass concerns.
Calgary adjudicator Mrs. Georgia Collins criticized three one act plays at Medicine Hat High School for poor use of stage and lines. She praised South Pacific and two award winning pieces but noted execution flaws in all three performances.
Mrs Collins praised Dale Schats for his Bob Edwards role and critiqued Sandra Brown as Mrs Gudgeon for limited mobility and delivery. Brown won best actress at the Southeastern Alberta high School Drama Festival.
Harriett Lewis as Mrs Carp and Donna Slentko as Mrs Fogein drew critique of similar voice ages. Lewis won best supporting actress for the festival. Barbara Harris and Kenny Bullock received top praise for So Wonderful In White while Jean Thacker won best actress in Medicine Hat Young People’s Drama Festival. Cast included Bob Townsend Saundra Sadowick Paula Neufelt Heather Johnston Anne McCormick Patricia Blair and Ron Miller directed by Henry Allergoth with Sharon Comeudon as assistant.
Lester B. Pearson was sworn in as Canada’s 14th prime minister and announced a 60 day decision plan. He named 25 cabinet members, outlined a royal commission on biculturalism, and formed a special cabinet to tackle trade economics and unemployment. The piece notes violence in Montreal and New Westminster and Alberta meteorite finds with oil revenue rising.
The Medicine Hat School District No 76 will raise student fees in unorganized areas next year affecting about 17 students. Carl Beach, 16, of Medicine Hat won the Optimist oratorical contest for the third straight year. Textbook rental fees will be increased next semester. Aldermen on the court of revision will receive payment for their services, announced Friday.
