In the House of Commons the under secretary urged adoption of a single exchange system for the Empire. He said he had studied the issue and hoped for broad support to spur investment and imperial trade, promising results beyond foreign trade.
A dispatch from Tien Tsin reports a Russian firm in Tien Tsin China received a cablegram announcing the annihilation of a Japanese division in the Khattrovsk district of Siberia. No official confirmation was available.

An explosion and ensuing fire at the Des Moines city gas plant killed one person and seriously injured six others. The blast damaged surrounding buildings and disrupted city gas services. Emergency crews responded to the scene early today.
Edmonton honors the late Hon. A. G. Mackay with a church service at First Presbyterian led by Rev. Dr. McQueen. Washington reports Canada has made definite overtures to the United States for direct diplomatic relations with British approval. Sir Auckland Geddes will visit Ottawa to set terms and choose a Canadian representative to Washington.
Washington April 27 representatives of large sugar refiners and Justice officials conferred but made no progress on the sugar question. Reports persisted that another rise in sugar was imminent as refiners say they cannot guarantee supplies without higher prices due to abnormal demand and fierce competition with foreign buyers.
Paris reports that French losses at Urfa northwest of Mesopotamia were not as serious as initially feared. A large detachment reportedly returned to town while others fled in different directions. Officials cite treachery as the cause of the reverse.

Mr. C. W. Twaites discovered a well about sixty feet deep after his car sunk into a hollow in his yard. A covering of earth and planks gave way revealing the well while bystanders jacked the car free. He jokes the car’s thirst proved his water finding prowess.
A morning fire at the St. Henri Shoe company in Montreal destroyed the premises and stock valued at 200000 dollars. Seven families living above the factory were nearly trapped but saved by prompt firemen action.
Central News dispatch reports a Bolshevik uprising in JugosSlavia with machine guns in Belgrade and heavy casualties in Laibach and Zagreb. Vienna reports ten civilians killed and 21 wounded as strikers clash with gendarmes at Laibach after a general strike called by Communist leader Goland.
London April 27 Arrangements for the New Zealand tour by the Prince of Wales were disrupted by a sudden railway strike. The Prince arrived at Auckland aboard the Renown during an Australian trip and plans had aimed to begin tours that day. An engine on the Governor General Earl of Liverpool’s train was found tampered with.
Madrid April 27 The king of Spain was fined two pesetas yesterday for walking on the grass in the Alcazar gardens. Each member of his suite who joined the king was fined as well. The mayor visited the palace to apologize, but the king said the guardian acted properly and should be rewarded for duty.
Spokane Washington April 27 A 14 year old school boy Bernard Lindley was found in the furnace room of a local hotel where he was employed shot through the heart. The coroner says death was by his own action. His father, Albn A Lindley, says the boy was largely accused of stealing a small amount of money from a hotel room.
Buenos Aires reports wheat at 26 pesos per hundred kilos, about 3.386 pesos gold a bushel. Over 8,000,000 bushels exported last week, a new record.
The council discussed Porter's Hill road rights of way and a proposed swimming pool. Aldermen debated cheaper alternate road options, and a meeting was planned with representatives from local groups to settle pool plans. Fire department notes on chemical equipment and recharges were also reviewed.

The Radical party drops 15 seats. Social Democrats and independents lose one seat. Trades gain three. Conservatives up seven. Socialists up four. The new assembly composition reflects these shifts.
