Hargrave denies seeking Progressive Conservative nomination
Prominent district rancher Bert Hargrave flatly denied rumors he will seek the Progressive Conservative nomination in Medicine Hat for the June 25 federal election. He told The NEWS at his Walsh home there is no basis for the rumors and he will not seek or accept the nomination under any circumstances. He declined to comment on active support for any candidate. Mayor Chuck Meagher will decide by next Tuesday whether to contest the Conservative nomination. Public School Board chair Jim Newton is the only declared Conservative candidate. Bud Olson plans to return to Medicine Hat to begin his re election campaign. A Social Credit nominating convention is expected soon with Walter Strom currently the only declared candidate. New Democratic Party directors meet tomorrow to plan local candidate selection.

Farmers Lose Tax Break On Purple Fuel For Farms
In Edmonton the Alberta Legislature debate failed to exempt farmers from the three cent fuel tax. The committee defeated by 44 to eight an amendment to remove the levy on purple gasoline used in farm vehicles, leaving farmers still exempt from the existing 42 cent tax. Clause by clause study of the bill to continue today. Also approved a bill allowing employment agencies to operate locally and gave second reading to four other measures including landmen licensing. Premier Manning supported a solicitor to assist landowners in disputes with landmen. A conciliation officer was named in the mines and minerals department to settle surface rights conflicts. The landmen bill targets unethical practices by a minority of landmen. A second reading was given to a bill expanding the universities commission powers over Calgary, Alberta, and Lethbridge campuses. Opposition Leader Lougheed pressed for post graduate expansion assurances.
