Prime Minister Trudeau announced dissolution of Parliament and an election for June 25 after weighing three options. He described governing as choosing and said he kept all options open until the Commons uprising moment. He cited February tax bill defeat and NDP drug bill filibuster as factors shaping his path.
Prime Minister Trudeau, after polls showing Liberal strength in Quebec and nationwide, formed a transitional cabinet. Mitchell Sharp described nationwide consultations as thorough. While some hawks shifted to dovish stances, Trudeau argued Canada’s economy favored an election now and would improve by fall.
Consensus grows for a people mandate to elect two major party leaders and for a Trudeau Quebec mandate to face Premier Daniel Johnson and De Gaulle allies. Trudeau signals election likely in coming months to dispel uncertainty as Parliament meets amid close caucus discussions.

Electricians rejected a two year 5 and 4 percent raise offer as gaps widen since Calgary wages. Alderman Edwards says no comment on union demands or stage of talks.
Tornadoes swept Kentucky Ohio and Michigan leaving 11 dead scores injured and hundreds homeless. In Falmouth Kentucky one third of the town damaged with losses estimated at 2 to 3 million dollars. Wheelersburg Ohio saw 75 injured as crews search over 40 demolished homes. A Frontier Michigan tornado caused one injury as the area was sparsely populated.
Calgary CP dispatch reports Izette Mitchell of Medicine Hat says ranching and farming are a closed shop to widows and single women. Speaking at a royal commission on the status of women in Calgary, she described facing loan and credit denials without a male guarantor and noted she could not participate in meetings on western stock issues as a woman.
