W H Andrews of the 2nd Canadian Mounted Rifles writes of quarantine at Cape Town and travel via Durban to Newcastle, describes weather, fruit, Kaffirs laborers, a coal mine, and Boer prisoners. He reports battles near Ladysmith and Colenso, forts at Tugela, graves of fallen soldiers, and predicts imminent action with Kitchener’s forces.
Ottawa issues guidance on homesteaders irrigation works as improving duties. Letters from P G Keyes and A L Sifton authorize inspectors to take evidence on patent applications for ditches built by settlers. The policy treats irrigation on homesteads as an improvement tied to duties and affects Northwest Territories applicants.
The Hoodoo made its first trip last Monday under Captain Johnston. The boat, overhauled by contractor Yuill, is ready for the freight and passenger traffic between Hog Town and Medicine Hat. J D McGregor of Brandon brought 180 head cattle for his ranch and will soon purchase horses in the west for the Fourth Contingent, with dates to be announced. Ranchers should prepare their horses.
