Medicine Hat approves 3.6 percent residential tax rise

Medicine Hat city council approves a 3.6 per cent rise in residential property tax for 2014, adding about 75 dollars to the average home’s annual bill. The total tax rate also includes a 5.3 per cent hike for commercial properties, and 6.6 per cent municipal tax growth after provincial education requisition changes. Energy profits buoy Medicine Hat's 2013 finances

Medicine Hat's 2013 unaudited financials show revenue rising to 454 million led by energy sales and flood grants, with total expenses at 426 million after a 50 million write down in gas inventory. Debt grew to 213.7 million while energy division dividends met 24.5 million and a 16.7 million contribution to the Community Capital Reserve.
