Seniors complex blaze drains Medicine Hat fire crew
Medicine Hat platoon chief Kuntz said an accident on Box Springs Road left the department short handed as four firefighters were sent to a senior complex fire. Three firefighters were hospitalized for exhaustion and smoke inhalation. An elderly woman on oxygen, who fell asleep while smoking, was rescued and flown to Calgary in critical condition with third degree burns covering over 40 percent of her body. The 32 suite building sustained about 450000 dollars in damage, with extensive damage to the affected suite and smoke damage on the third floor across nearby units. Residents face uncertain return dates as smoke dissipates and investigators assess the scene.
