The Formosa earthquake leaves about 2,711 dead and 11,286 injured with 250,000 homeless. Fires erupt in ruins and relief crews struggle amid aftershocks as 16,493 dwellings are destroyed and property losses rise to millions.
J S Woodsworth, leader of the Cooperative Commonwealth Federation, predicts the CCF will not win the Dominion elections but will hold the balance of power in Canada's 18th parliament. Speaking in Winnipeg after returning from Ottawa, he said this would pave the way for a CCF administration after the next general elections.
Caris Manskanko a farmer south of the city faced resisting arrest charges at the city police court after a pursuit by Chief Taylor on Dunmore road. Evidence states a bottle was produced during a search, leading to an arrest. authorities later reported moonshine found on his farm and a further liquor charge to be pursued at the R C M P court.

The group included 29 leaders and many parents supervised by District Scout Commissioner J J Noth and assistants. The train returns at 4 am tomorrow. Jessop Nott telegram said arrived safely hungry and ready for what to come.
J A Slim Carmichael piloted a transport plane with six passengers from Washington when one engine failed about 85 miles out and the craft returned to D C. The remaining engines enabled a safe landing despite damaged gear and a torn tire after an engine exploded and fell near Hancock Maryland.

Kingston mourns the death of Senator H. S. Beland who died at noon while en route to Ottawa from Louisville Quebec aged 66. A 1897 Quebec member, he moved to Ottawa in 1902 and became senator in 1925 serving as postmaster general and minister of soldiers civil re establishment. He saw overseas service in the Great War and was prisoner of war for three years with Belgian hospital staff.
Atlanta April 21 news reports Georgia pine paper used for rotogravure printing. Dr. Charles Herty of Savannah presented a laboratory roll for testing. several Atlantic Journal rotogravure prints were produced on the paper and deemed satisfactory.
Edmonton April 22 The Alberta Legislature faces a busy week with about 30 resolutions and potential bills. Debate may determine session length, top issue is Duggan’s redistribution plan to cut seats from 63 to 34, with an amendment to adjourn instead of proroguing. Bills restricting court reporting will soon receive royal assent.
Milwaukee records sparked a rumor that Mae West married Frank Wallace in 1911. The actress said she never knew the man, never married then, and could not have been married at age 18. She noted two other Mac Wests on stage and questioned Milwaukee’s dating.
In Calgary on April 22 social credit leader William Aberhart dismissed former Premier J. E. Brownlee's test to prove the legality of forcing merchants to accept non negotiable social credit certificates. He compared it to forcing a merchant to take a bank cheque, noting cheques are not legal tender and some firms may refuse them.
Oliva Dionne wired Ontario Premier Hepburn and Welfare Minister Croll requesting a doctor appointed by him and Mrs. Dionne examine the quintuplets immediately, claiming the infants’ condition is more serious than allowed to learn. Hospital reports say the babies have head colds but are not seriously ill.
An inquest opened this afternoon at the R C M S P court into the death of A A Smith of Calgary who was fatally injured on the highway west of Redcliff. Smith was brought to Medicine Hat hospital by Dr Ward after being struck by a westbound car driven by G B Fay of Calgary. The inquest was adjourned for one week for further evidence.
Sir Stafford Cripps William Irvine and Norman Thomas addressed a large Ontario C C Federation convention meeting in Toronto. Irvine warned patching capitalism is unsatisfactory Thomas urged socialism as the world’s hope. The speakers framed the gathering as an international conference based on human interests with Roosevelt era policy cited as proof socialism can do the job.
In the Senate Huey Long charges the Roosevelt administration with arming a “gang of brigands” to spend millions in Louisiana. He warns that withholding relief money could force Louisiana to refuse federal taxes, likening the President to a Boston tea party organizer and hinting at a harsher outcome.
