AUPE votes 82 percent against Alberta contract in Medicine Hat

In Medicine Hat 82 percent of licensed practical nurses nursing attendants and personal care aides voting against a mediator proposed three year contract with Alberta Health Authorities. About 6700 AUPE members across Alberta cast ballots though results were incomplete Wednesday night.

Red Deer man seeks parole after manslaughter conviction

Red Deer man Troy McCafferty 27 is eligible for full parole Oct 18 after a June 1998 manslaughter conviction for the death of his four year old stepson Jordan Quinney. Quinney died from a swollen brain with fractured ribs bruises and bite marks. McCafferty is at Bowden Institution and did not apply for day parole or temporary absences.

Hamilton woman gives 40 million to community foundation

Joyce Amesty, a resident of Ancaster, donates 40 million from Red Hat Inc to the Hamilton Community Foundation. The gift would be the largest by a Canadian to a local community foundation, with a notable contrast to a 1998 50 million UBC donation. Bob Young’s software firm, once start up, helped fuel her wealth.

Klein denounces health protest after legislature riot

Alberta Premier Ralph Klein denounced the protest outside the Edmonton legislature as unreasonable after a night of violence and property damage. The Liberal opposition accused Klein of inciting riots as Question Period was cancelled and security tightened amid a continuing fight over Bill 11 to expand private health care.

Ludwig held in jail awaiting sentence for arson and vandalism

Ludwig, called a cunning man, was convicted on five charges related to vandalism in northern Alberta oilpatch. He faces up to 14 years on the most serious charge of possession of explosives tied to a 1998 Suncor well blast near Hinton. Co accused Richard Boonstra was convicted on one mischief charge and acquitted on 12 others.
