Sterilization Board Named Under British Columbia Act
Victoria April 16 British Columbia's board of eugenics to be created under the Sterilization Act will assume duties when the statute comes into effect July 1. It will be a voluntary board with about 198 members, including a judge a postmaster atist and a social service worker yet to be named. The board will pass on recommendations from superintendents of mental homes or industrial schools where hereditary mental deficiency or serious mental disease may be passed on to future generations. If consent is obtained the board may order applications. withheld consent blocks the operation. Costs are borne by the institution. Between 2600 and 2800 patients are in care in BC mental institutions, a rise over ten years. Gross expenditure for year ending March 31 1932 was about 1 020 687.
